“The Grand is Great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

We love staying at The Grand. Last time we stayed there was for a weekend getaway in February 2012.

Note: Parking there is a little tricky because what is the hotel entrance is on 2nd Ave S which is a one-way with a bus lane. Basically you can't unload or valet park on that street. Instead you need to come up to the intersection of 7th St and 2nd Ave where there's a valet sign on the right (that we missed several times because buses were parked in front of it). The city messed things up for the hotel so don't blame them.

The hotel building is old (aka Historic) but has been renovated with a modern "cool" look. We were fortunate enough to get a great deal on a Suite with a living room and full bathroom. Very nice for the price! I think the room # was 1515?

The lobby bar/restaurant is small but fun. We were going to go out and never left the lobby because we (my wife) started talking with the bartender and the people sitting next to us. The bar made their own infused vodkas which were a lot of fun to sample...

Check-in early so you can hit the complimentary wine hour. If you need a massage the LifeTime Spa in the hotel was great.

Avoid boring Minneapolis chain hotels and stay here. You won't regret it.

Room Tip: The rooms are not all the same. We had a little issue checking in last time where the bathroom in o...

I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at The Grand! Thank you for the excellent feedback. I apologize for the inconvenience with the valet parking. It is definitely a challenge, but we are exploring our options to better the situation. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and we hope you visit again!

We were looking for a nice downtown hotel that would allow our chihuahua mix to accompany us, and this hotel more than fit the bill! This was one of only two hotels we could find in downtown Minneapolis that does not require a non-refundable deposit and nightly up-charge for your pet (you just sign an agreement acknowledging your financial responsibility for any damage). My understanding is that they do have pet-free rooms for those who suffer from pet allergies.

When we arrived the gal at the desk gave us directions on where we could take our dog to do her business. Food and water bowls had been placed in our room, which was a nice touch. We enjoyed the free happy hour wine and sangria in the lobby with our dog, along with a couple other canine guests.

We had some minor issues that prevented this from being a top-rated experience across the board:
* The air conditioning system system was loud and seemed old. I was jarred out of my sleep whenever it would kick on during the night. However, street noise was not bad considering we had a room that faced the street.
* Our room would have benefited from just a couple of small touches that would have made the hotel seem more premium. For example, the ironing board seemed old and rickety, and there was a hole in the shower curtain. It would help if someone with a discerning eye would do room walk-throughs and then the hotel could spend just a few dollars to fix these types of things.

All in all, we had a wonderful time with our doggie at the The Grand Hotel Minneapolis. It was great we were all able to stay in a nicely decorated hotel that had retained some historic character.

Often sold out with only 149 rooms, this luxury spot can easily be reached on the Light Rail from the MSP airport. In center City, convenient, but not on the skyway.

Really special guestrooms and bathrooms. The attached private health club is really great for guests. Internet is free IF you sign up as a frequent guest.

Room Tip: Limited F&B in this hotel.

Good, but not great. Stayed there 7 years ago and found the stay memorable, from the well appointed decor (not tired), and pampered special effects, but today, just okay.

My husband and I stayed here in July 2012 for the weekend while visiting our daughter. I chose the hotel for two reasons: one, I am a big believer in Kimpton Hotels, and two, because of the pool and exercise facility privileges one has while a guest at the hotel. We were not disappointed at all as Kimpton once again shows why it enjoys such a great niche market in the boutique hotel sector.
Our room was large by hotel standards and the bed was extremely comfortable with great linens. The bathroom was also large by hotel standards. The amenities were great and the bathrobes are such a nice touch.
We did not use the restaurant in the hotel as we were meeting our daughter at various places throughout Minneapolis. We also did not take advantage of room service either. We were within walking distance of some great restaurants and Nicollet Mall.
We will definitely return to the hotel again. The only item that really got on my nerves was that each time I came down to the lobby for coffee each morning that we were there, they had just ran out. I then had to wait for someone to bring more coffee (they do not have coffee makers in the room). It isn't a dealbreaker, but it is funny that BOTH days this happened to me. I guess just bad coffee karma...
it is a great hotel that deserves a visit while in Minneapolis. We will return and try the coffee morning routine again!

Just back from 4 days over 4th of July week - got the "no sales tax" package that included free valet parking plus two free cocktails. if you sign up for the free Kimpton Experience club (or whatever it is called) you get free internet. I paid $406 total for 4 nights. Excellent room with nice big bathroom (large shower + a separate bath with tv). quiet location. free wine between 5 and 6 pm wasn't bad. good location about 5-8 blocks from main strip of restaurants on Nicolette Mall (a street). see my separate reviews of Solero and Sea Change. Walked around neighborhood until 10-10:30 pm without any nervousness (i.e., it was safe). free coffee in lobby in morning was mediocre but Caribou coffee located one flight up by the skyway. free newspaper (NY Times, US Today) every day including Sunday - quite a treat on Sunday to get that. no ice machine but they will bring you a bucket (did so without asking one day!). very nice staff. valet parking booth is on 7th street - not in front of hotel (they should point this out on their website). go down 3rd Ave to 7th, turn right on 7th and drive almost to the corner of 2nd Ave. Nice guys working the booth. I called ahead when i wanted my car and it took 10-15 min. no hassles. strongly recommend. didn't use the exercise room but it looked awesome.

I booked this hotel for the simple fact of whooing my fiance into moving to my home state of minnesota. It was all i could have asked for. From the check-in, to the room, to the bar, to staying downtown, it was unbelievable. She loved the hotel, and minny so much, i dont think we were in the hotel 5 min, and she turned to me and said..."we are moving here!" That was music to this ole boys ears. Anyways, back to the hotel. When they say that this hotel is one of a kind, they are not joking. The curbside service was excellent, the bellmen took our bags inside, and stayed with them through the whole check-in. The front desk service, Brittany and Paul or Josh i think their names were, were so polite and patient and helpful, i could not have asked for anything better. We got to the room, and my jaw dropped, the bed was enormous, and the bathroom? I could have lived in it it was so big. We had a suite overlooking downtown minneapolis, and it did not disappoint. WE ate at the restaurant upstairs and it was tremendous, it was a weekday thank goodness so it was dead to be honest, but all in all it was good. The crowning jewel was the 52000 square foot lifetime fitness. I spend every morning in the gym, it had everything. free weights, machines, cross fits, ellipticals, all that. I couldnt have asked for a better stay. When we went to check out, we were both kind of sad, because we had to stay at a different hotel the rest of our stay. But, we got to the other hotel, werent satisfied, and the same day, we returned to the grand and completed our trip there. It was outstanding, from the service, to the food, to the bar, they gym, the room....everything was perfect. Unless something happens, THIS is the hotel we will always stay at. Thank you Grand hotel mpls, you guys did a wonderful job in ensuring this mn boy can come home.

Room Tip: It doesnt really matter which room you get, because all the rooms are quiet. WE wanted a higher floo...
