Nicollet Mall is only for buses and cabs, and the sidewalks are wide and full of people in the summer. Thursdays in the warm months there is a farmer's market, and the sidewalks get very busy, be prepared to not walk fast. There are all kinds of people, college students, DT professionals, tourists, homeless. There are many restaurants and bars to pick from, Macy's, Gaviidae, Minneapolis Public Library, the IDS and many sky-scrapers. In the summer this Mall deserves a walk from Orchestra Hall to Washington. You can easily access the skyways if it is raining, or too hot or cold. There are also vendors and food-trucks on street away on Marquette during the summer, and far into the colder months.
