“Double Check Your Bill Before Paying!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

My wife and I stayed at "The Hotel Minneapolis, Autograph Collection" on Nov. 17, 2012. It's a nice hotel in a good location with clean rooms that are fairly priced. The rooms don't have wifi, but it is available in the lobby area. My main complaint, and the reason for my "poor" rating, is the way the hotel staff tried to charge me $30 for valet parking when I used a public lot about a block away. We parked in the hotel parking area for about five minutes while checking in. When we did, the parking attendant asked us to leave him our car key. We told him that we were just checking in and would be leaving within a few minutes. He still insisted that we leave our car key with him. He wrote my name on a "Vehicle Claim Check" and listed the "Retreival Time" as "5 minutes." We checked in, got our car key back, and then moved our car to a nearby public lot. When we checked out in the morning, a $30 parking fee had been added to our bill. I realize that sometimes mistakes are made, but this did not seem like an honest mistake. The hotel desk staff corrected the mistake without question. I suspect the valet parking staff get paid a commission on each car that parks at the hotel or each customer that pays for parking, whether they used the valet parking or not. This incentive for dishonesty would benefit both the valet parking staff and the hotel. The bottom line for me is that this is a good place to stay but check over your bill before paying it.

Dear bkuster58,

I am sorry to read that a careless oversight by our valet associate left your experience with us at The Hotel Minneapolis less than favorable.

Please be assured that I have reviewed your comments with our entire valet staff and management to ensure that they double-check there posting moving forward to ensure that we do not post charges inappropriately.

Our valet staff does not work off of commission for the vehicles that are parked and truly made an honest mistake, for this I do apologize. I am glad to hear that our front desk agent was able to immediately correct the mistake during your check-out experience.

Thank you for taking the time to communicate your experience and hopefully the next time your travel plans bring you back to the downtown Minneapolis area The Hotel Minneapolis will be your hotel of choice for your overnight accommodations.

Sincerely,
Don Cook

The Hotel Minneapolis is a beautifully done, convenient and service oriented oasis in downtown Minneapolis. The staff is on top of all your needs with room service being at the top of the list. Staying there made us feel like royalty, but at a "two-star" price! Their weekend specials are a fantastic bargain especially if you are coming in for a play at the Guthrie or a Hollidazzle Parade or just a plain old get-away.

I stayed in this hotel for two nights and was pleased. It is very easy to reach from the airport. The people at the front desk are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean, and the bed is quite comfortable. There is a coffee maker in the room, but no mini-bar or fridge. So there are no beverages in the room except two $4 bottles of Fiji water. But there is a vending machine down the hall.
My only complaints = The food is not good in the hotel, so don't eat here! Also, you can hear everything going on in the hall. But the way the floors/rooms are set up, you rarely have people walking by so it is bearable.

I was in town on business. I stayed at the Marriott City Center the week before and didn't care for it much but it was close to a meeting I had the next day. I tried The Hotel Minneapolis the next week. I probably won't be going back there either. The lobby is kind of cool; it's an old bank. The hotel staff at the front desk were pleasant, but I waited too long in line. The rooms were clean. There was no bottled water in the room. The rooms are also not very sound proof. I could hear everything going on in the hall and in the rooms on either side.

Stayed for two nights. Solo traveller. Here's the quick and dirty.
This is a nice hotel with a distinctive feel. Rooms are small but clean. There is an extra charge for internet (~ $10/24 hrs), separate charge for using the safe in the room and parking is about $30 per night (however, I was told that street parking - if you're not concerned about safety in the downtown area - is free). The gyn is 24 hours and requires card access. Treadmills, ellipticals, machine weights, apples, water and headphones available for use.
Hotel is in the heart of downtown. Plenty to do for those looking to dine, socialize or watch a play or a movie. Public transport (tram) is across the road, easy access.
About 15 minutes to the airport and Mall of America.
I would not recommend this hotel for travelers with kids but solo or couples will have a decent stay.
Front desk staff is very helpful.

Room Tip: If you have kids, make sure you ask for a "bigger room" as I looked at 2 rooms and they we...

Dear DocMoMan,

Thank you for your feedback and taking the time to post your comments. We are pleased to hear that you found our hotel “Distinctive” but just not Outstanding.

We do take the time to review all the feedback that we receive from our guests and utilize it to continually enhance the levels of service that we can deliver so that we can consistently provide Outstanding service and make all of our guests walking away looking for the next return visit.

Unfortunately, our internet and valet services we do need to source from outside companies and we are continually looking at ways to minimize the cost to our guests. The safes in each guestroom are for the use of all guests occupying that room and are for your additional security and do not require a fee. I am sorry if someone on staff instructed you differently.

Should your travel plans bring you back to the downtown Minneapolis area, we hope that you would choose us for your overnight accommodations so that you can experience how we are striving to continually make all our guests experiences “Outstanding”.

Sincerely,
Don Cook

We stayed here for our 6 year wedding anniversary and were so pleased! I got a great deal on the room through hotwire.com and they gave us free breakfast for our anniversary :-) The hotel is also within walking distance of some great restaurants and good shopping. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay downtown and will venture to do so for future anniversaries as well :-)

Gorgeous hotel to stay at! Top of the line everything! Great for business travelers. Stayed here with some friends and we had a blast. The rooms are perfect. The staff is friendly and helpful. The location is in downtown so great to walk around if you have the time. There is valet service if you prefer or if you are cheap like us you park around the corner at a parkade! Nothing bad to say about this place at all. I would highly recommend staying here.
