“Great day trip on a budget”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2015

If you like art you could spend hours here, and I advise taking it by sections, at a nice leisurely pace, and planning a return trip for what you don't have time for since admission is free. That's right, FREE! There is also FREE parking nearby! It is a beautiful place, with a lot of art pieces. If you are just a semi-fan of art you can still enjoy it and just move on to each piece that catches your eye. I would still allow for at least 90min for this since there are 2 floors full of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, tapestries, screens, and etc. Sometimes, if you time it right, they have special family events. If interested I would contact them for details and dates. I have gone here with my son, and he has gone with friends from high school. It is right in a local bus route (route #11) so using public transit to get there is easy if you don't have a car. Also, it is right next to the Children's Theatre so you could go to the museum in the afternoon and the Theatre that night. What a great day that would be.

“In addition to art, the cafeteria is a must.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2015

As others have said the free admission is amazing and the parking was but $6 for all day.
The interactive exhibits for kids was most impressive. With all of the news reporting on Muslim activities, I wanted to see the museum's Islam Exhibit. We found the courtesy map and directional signs inside the museum to be inadequate. We had to get directions twice from employees to find the right exhibit hall. Once there I was disappointed in the content as it was a rather superficial display.
The cafeteria experience and its marketing to eat right was most impressive. I tried some organic sandwich that I ordinarily would never try but did in the spirit of the museum's encouragement to eat healthy. My sandwich was amazing good.
This was certainly worth visiting with or without kids.

During this year the MIA will have 52 surprises such at the first which is the showing of "Woman in Blue Reading a Letter by Vermeer and exhibits such as "The Hapsburgs: Rarely Seen Masterpieces from Europe's Greatest Dynasty". In addition there is a great exhibit of American Modern artists.

“Museum a Rare Treat $0 cost /Special exhibits a Bit Pricey”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2015

We were enthralled with the Italian Style exhibit as I attended with my 2 young adult daughters. Cost was $20 each. Since we all appreciate the design and clothes it was an excellent exhibit. How wonderful that this exhibit could be experienced here in the USA. Many years ago we also attended the Native American special exhibit, and wish that there could be another one since Native American art is so diverse and not as well understood. As far as the main museum goes select venues that you are most interested in as the exhibits are extensive and enjoy a few hours of viewing. In May is the ART in BLOOM where floral design is paired with an art piece. Go the first few days as some of the floral arrangements get droopy the last day. Earlier the better as it does get crowded.

“A Gem”

If you are in the Twin Cities and enjoy art (ancient to modern), do not miss a visit to this amazing place. It is hard to believe that admission is FREE. It is a treasure.
