“First visit was this evening--a flawless meal all around! I had the vegetarian dinner with caramelized brussels...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2008

First visit was this evening--a flawless meal all around! I had the vegetarian dinner with caramelized brussels sprouts, which were amazing, and my husband had the flank steak which was very tender and savory. The wine pours were generous! And the price of the wines by the glass were very reasonable for the quality of meal/atmosphere. Levain is located in the back of Turtle Bread Company in the Shenandoah Terrace neighborhood of Minneapolis. This may become a fast favorite of mine. Price was VERY reasonable for the quality of food, excellent service, and fun, neighborhood atmosphere of this restaurant.

“Favorite Bistro in Minneapolis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2008

I have been to Cafe Levain several times now and find the food to be exceptional for the price. This restaurant is not overly crowded (which surprises me) and I can often get in on a weekend night without a reservation, and without a much of a wait.

All the menu items are $20 or less though they offer daily fish and meat specials and these tend to be pricier. The entrees come with a side of your choice (I like the yams). The braised beef short rib
is my favorite but I haven't had a bad meal there yet.

For starters, the French onion soup and scallops are both recommended.

Their wine selection is decent and reasonable.

A couple of times the service has been less than perfect, but this is not the norm. Make sure to complain if there service is substandard. They need to know when this happens.

“One of the Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2008

I had Dinner last weekend with my wife and another couple. They were busy, but fit us in. For the fabulous quality of the food that you get, it is a bargain. Levain had recently dumbed down the menu and lowered prices, but it is still a 5 star desination.

“A hidden gem!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2005

Levain is a well-disguised restaurant in south Minneapolis. Located in back of a bread company, it uses a large, airy, open room to wonderful effect. The food is fantastic, with daily menus offering the specialities that day. As you would hope with a daily menu, everything is very fresh and of high quality.

There's a good range of seafood, steaks and other dishes. Levain does well in making sure the food tastes as good as the presentation looks, which can sometimes be a miss at highly-rated restaurants. Extensive wine selection and wonderful dessert options round out the experience.

Service is good, although our server had a bit of a "wine snob" attitude. It was by no means enough to not highly recommend a visit and other staff were wonderful. Atmosphere was great, with a live saxaphone that complimented, rather than interefered with, conversation.

If you're looking for a great meal outside of the usual areas of MSP, a visit to Levain would be well worth it. 6pm would be fine, at 7pm you'd be waiting a while.
