“You get what you pay for!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

We've been going to the Shooting Star Casino regularly since 2002.
The place is getting run down, though they do seem to be making an effort to upgrade.
The casino is smoky beyond belief, be prepared to flee to the (much quieter) non-smoking section if you need a break from the smoke.
The staff are hit and miss. On our last visit, in April of 2013, we had the RUDEST check-in clerk we've ever had, anywhere. She made no effort whatsoever to hide her disdain for both her job and guests.
The other staff, particularly housekeeping staff, were great. Perhaps becuase they don't have as much interaction with the public they haven't become as jaded? Who knows.
The deli staff can be somewhat curt, the servers in the Whispering Winds are, for the most part, awesome!
I've been to this place enough to know which of the Star Rewards staff and cashiers are rude, so I know what to expect when I'm dealing with them.
The Mustang Lounge bartenders and servers are hit-and-miss as well. Some friendly, some not.
The drinks prices have been creeping up the last little while, which is funny...you'd think they'd be more than happy to cloud your judgement, especially in a casino.
The lounge, however, can be a ton of fun during Vikings games!
The rooms are your basic, run-of-the-mill hotel room, nothing special, just somewhere to place your head after a long night of losing money. The walls however, are PAPER THIN! You will hear everything, and I do mean "everything", in adjoining rooms!
We try to stay on the corner rooms on the 4th floor, away from everyone. The floors don't have any insulation in them either, so if you are not on the top floor, you will swear you have a T-Rex stomping in the room above you, when in fact its probably a 10yr old kid.
Also, there is a train line running along the west side of the hotel, so if you are facing that way, you're gonna hear it loud and clear.
So if you're looking for a 5 star resort and are expecting to be pampered and spoiled..forget it.
If you're looking for a cheap place to stay for a couple of days of fun...then this will do.
Keep your expectaions low and you will be satisfied!

Room Tip: Top floor is quieter, face away from train tracks!

We had to call front desk 2 times to get out champagne and coupon for dinner that we arrived late on for our reservation suppose to be a surprise for my husband nothing was what I expected basket of spa products was a bottle of body wash that was it. Front desk didn't seem to care about how I felt at all it was our first time visit we were celebrating our 29 year anniversary!

Cleverly hidden in this casino is fine dining? Absolutely! From excellent service, to ambiance, to fabulous food can be found in the 2 One 8 restaurant. Steaks and seafood done to perfection with delicious sides and apps. And if you are able, try the decadent chocolate cake for dessert. It is kind of spendy for around here but the food and outstanding service is worth it.

Rooms are not very clean.Housekeeping does its best with what they have to deal with. More management error than workers. Hotel carpets are filthy.Dont take your shoes off.
Casino is fun but needs a major clean job. Especially the CARPETS.Staff is friendly.Too many

Rooms are never all that clean but this trip was even worse. I doubt the room was vacuumed and hair was all over the shower. I think it would be safe to say that all housekeeping did was the beds and empty the garbage. The bartenders provided decent service. The Sunday morning brunch was average at best but one might never get a beverage. It used to be self serve, but when they started using servers it went downhill fast. I have waited,15-20 minutes into a meal lately before I can even get a water. They are lucky the Canadians fill up the place on weekends or else they would be in trouble.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

My seventy-nine year old mother and I stayed at the Shooting Star Casino & Hotel in Mahnomen, Minnesota for two nights starting on Saturday, February 16th, 2013. When making our reservations online, we requested a room on the top floor, away from any noise, and we were given a Deluxe room on the second (main) floor of the Main Lodge near the back entrance.

The large-sized non-smoking room included two high queen-sized beds, each with two pillows on them, a clock radio, two regular chairs with a table, a sofa bed, a medium-sized HD television and remote with limited channel selection (mostly sports), free Wi-Fi, a mini-fridge, a microwave, and a coffeemaker. There was also a sliding door leading out to a balcony which overlooked the parking lot area.

The large-sized bathroom included four sets of towels, a hairdryer, bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion, as well as two bars of soap. The shower "sort of" had a handle, which my mother was able to use it to get in and out of with ease.

The nearest major town is Detroit Lakes, Minnesota which is about 40 miles south on Highway 59. There you will find a variety of restaurants and shopping (including a Wal-Mart), which we usually visit while we are gambling at this casino.

The hotel is connected to the casino next door, and is not too far of a walk. The casino has a few restaurants, an indoor swimming pool, a gift shop, spa, and a fairly large non-smoking slot machine section with its own entrance at the rear. There is also an events center where concert acts come to play.

After taxes, our rate for Room 2026 came to $257.21 U.S. Funds for the two night stay. Overall, we only came to this hotel because we wanted to gamble at the casino, otherwise we would not have stayed here. The room itself was a little dirty and we did not feel very comfortable during our visit.

From start to finish, the customer service at this casino was terrible. They lost our hotel reservations that we had booked a month in advance, gave us a down graded room that was EXTREMELY filthy, and ignored our calls to speak with a manager the entire time we were there. When we called to speak to a manager again after our stay, they basically dismissed our complaint stating we should have kept trying to get a hold of a manager while we were there...even though we told them we tried about 4 different times while we were there!!!
