“4th visit and we plan to keep coming back!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2011

We always enjoy our visit to Caribou Highland resort. It's easy to find a great deal for any time of the year, to make it affordable for either a family vacation or a couple's retreat. We love the amenities from the tennis courts, to the outdoor/indoor pools, and the canoeing on the poplar river. All in all, something for everyone.

I brought my family (including 3 dogs) for some R&R away from the cities. Upon arrival we found the rooms to be satisfactory, not great granted the purpose. Wilderness all around we found lots of fantastic areas for city dogs to explore! One restaurant on site :( We dined in the dining room the 1st night, a complete disappointment. 2 of the 3 entrees ordered were wrong but we were starving after a 4.5 hour drive. The second night we tried the take out pizza offered from the same place. Again it was horrible! One pizza wasn't cooked to completion :( If you're heading up there bring lots of PB&J!!!

We stayed in the townhomes with our young children and extended family. There were plenty of activites and things to see, so never a dull moment. The location of Caribou Highlands was centrally located to everything. We only had two complaints, but they were big ones. The beds (total group rented 2.5 townhomes) in all units were terrible. We all felt like we had slept on a pile of rocks and most beds sagged in the middle. The other issue was the temp in the lower level unit we had rented. Apparently the AC is controlled on the main level only, so the lower level unit has no ability to regulate the temp. Our first night, the temp inside was as low as 64 degrees. We called the front desk and the best they could offer was space heaters and some extra blankets. Fortunately, the mechanicals room was joined to our unit. My husband shut the whole heating/cooling system off and problem solved.

Room Tip: For the townhouses, do not rent the lower level units.

Had a nice stay at Caribou. The staff was extremely helpful, starting with the reservation all the way to the check-out. The room was nice, furnishings up-to-date, and everything in working order. The cleanliness of the room was not perfect, but good enough. The pool temp was great. Would stay here again. Although we typically receive better rates at Eagle Ridge, Caribou is a step up and the staff is significantly better.

We found this to be a quiet and peaceful place to stay. The amenities and activities are great. We were impressed with the staff; from the front desk, to the restaurant, to the maid service. Everyone was helpful and friendly. We will definitely try to get back to this property.

Planned family getaway (husband, myself, and dog) to Lutsen. Had never been to area before and we quickly fell in love. We are outdoorsy people so it fit us perfectly, so much to do for free in the area. The lodge has a nice heated outdoor pool as well as indoor pool & jacuzzi. Several campfire spots and great trails right out your back door! The lodge also offers several activities for free (canoeing trips, smores, hiking shuttles, etc.). We stayed in pet friendly room which was sufficient, but nothing over the top, I'm sure due to it's purpose.

We had a great time at Moguls bar and met some fantastic people who we ran as we explored the rest of the area. Locals and workers were VERY friendly and gave us lots of advice and direction on where to go and what to do. All the restaurants we ate at were great! Never had a bad meal, though we heard that Papa's didn't have that great of food - we did stop there for a malt which was fantastic and their live band which was great!

STRONGLY recommend the the Tram ride, Temprance River hike, chow at Blue Fin Grill, b.fast at Lutsen Resort, and of course pie at Betty's Pies on the way up (or back)!

Room Tip: Suggest mountain view rooms!
