“Do not stay in D4 in the villas!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

Terrible bed, decor, smelled aged, and no Internet in the unit. We traveled in an rv and used the shower and toilet only. This unit should be removed from the rental pool or massively remodeled. These villas are not at the main building and you will not have beach, pool or restaurant.

I'm not saying this place was terrible, but it wasn't worth the price or the travel to get there. The rooms and the food are just so-so. Staff seems a bit harried and indifferent to visitor's needs at times. We were not there at a terribly busy time, yet it felt like there were too many people there to have the kind of quiet get-away we were hoping for. Bottom line, I wouldn't stay again.

I stayed here 2 notes with a living social deal. Had never stayed before - usually stay at Bluefin in Tofte. The Town home was huge and beautiful! Would stay again in a heartbeat. The river that runs into Lake Superior makes the resort a great spot on the lake.

This place is beautiful, the service was terrific, but we have several strong cautions. This does not mean avoid this place but please consider the cautions before making a reservation.
The good things: It is incredibly beautiful. Whether view from the Poplar River Condo (pictured below) or on the main beach, also pictured below, this place is really beautiful. The water is mesmerizing. The beach is well maintained.
The staff is very friendly, helpful and responsive. The owners have done a very good job in hiring pleasant, positive people who are very nice to work with.
Food is very good in the main dining room with terrific lake views Expect to pay $15-30 for an entree. If this is not for you, there also is a pub in the main lodge with the same but also less expensive menu items.
* Poplar River Condo - an 8-10 minute walk from the main lodge, was very, very nice. Two large rooms with full kitchen, dishes and glasses. Wonderful views toward the lake.
* Superior National Golf course literally across the street is one of the best inland public golf courses in the state (see separate review)

The concerns:
* We reserved for Labor Day Weekend at the last minute, and only one option was available - a Poplar River condo. We were on the first floor. People walked around on the second floor until almost midnight. It was very loud and distracting. At these prices (please see below), this should NOT happen. Major soundproofing is needed. I would check on whether work has been done...if not, I'd only accept a 2nd floor condo. If you want to sleep well, please consider.
* This room was $285/night. You can do FAR better by reserving well ahead or coming mid-week. They do have much lower prices.
* As others have noted, the wi-fi in our room was quite slow. If you are expecting to spend a lot of time "on-line" please be aware of this.
* There was an untended fire burning on the beach. As a former Eagle Scout (many years ago), I know this is not ok. I mentioned this to a person at the front desk and she promised to pass on my concerns.

I brought these concerns to the person at the front desk. She said a manager was not available at 9 AM on Labor Day, when we checked out. What's up with that? However, she did take a more than 1/3 off for the night that we were really disturbed. That was appreciated. However, all the concerns mentioned above still stand.

This is a beautiful well run place. I would come back but only using cautions mentioned above.

Room Tip: Please see above - DON'T accept a 1st floor Poplar River Condo.

After booking a sea villa at $269 a night, we were expecting a 4 star experience. What we got was more like a 1 star. The location was nice, right on Lake Superior, but our unit was out of the 70's, dated & musty smelling. The mattress was sorely on need of being replaced as many of the previous guests had stated in the villa journal. The sea villas are 3 miles from the main lodge & resort and not near anything else although they do have a pool & playgroumd. Even though the ads make it appear you are in a stand alone "villa", we were in a long building sandwiched between 2 story units on both sides. All units share the same small waterfront (maybe 20 feet) so there's very little privacy as people walk, grill & sit at the firepit right outside your window view of the lake. Towels were scratchy too. I probably wouldn't have been so disappointed if I'd paid $120 a night, but felt it was not a good value for the price.

A group of friends decided to assemble in Lutsen to spend a few days relaxing and eating. We reserved the condos (Bldg. 500) on Poplar River. Great location. Nice units.

The problem we encountered was Internet access. Worse than dial up. Now people would say, "You're on vacation. Put away your devices." I arrived with one work chore that needed my attention. More importantly, our group of friends are an Internet-based 'club.' For the friends that were unable to join us, they were expecting daily updates (along with pictures). The wireless Internet was slower than the dial-up days.

We loved this place but as a group, we could not consider returning here. As an individual, I would return.

Just had a wonderful night at Lutsen Resort. Incredible location, incredible accommodations, and great staff. I sat out on the deck last night and watched the full moon come up over Lake Superior. It was a perfect night to just sit back and relax. Everyone I met seemed so happy to be here...truly amazing!
