“No hot water, big ants in room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2008

Probably a nice place, but just had a whole bunch of things go wrong...

Stayed on 3rd floor of main lodge two nights 6/6 and 6/7. First morning didn't have any hot water- trying to get family of four ready for wedding. Called front desk- they said we needed to let faucets run. 20 min later called front desk again- they gave us a different room to shower in. Water cold in other room, so went to front desk. Report was that boiler was out and it would be 30 min before warm. Too late for us- needed to leave for wedding.

Come back to room second night after reception and room is full of big black ants- on the 3rd floor! Spent better part night and next morning killing ants and clearing them out of luggage!

After I complained at checkout, front desk initially offered 10% off- I wound up getting 20%. Think I deserved 50%...

Lutsen is not what it was. Once it was a classic lodge on the lake, now it is a classic lodge surrounded by development that is reminiscent of sprawling suburbs. Not so long ago you could go to Lutsen Resort and feel like you had found a real rustic escape. It was a resort that felt traditional and historic. Now...well, the bluffs around the resort are developed with horrible townhomes. At night instead of being tucked away in the woods on a beautiful lake with a wonderful nighttime sky above you, you get to see into living rooms and bedrooms that hover over you like a huge urban wall! It is absolutely horrible.

I would not recommend this to someone looking for an old style vacation. Unfortunately Lutsen feels too much like an AmericInn you might find on a freeway interchange today. It DOES have the lake, but you can find better value and better lake experience elsewhere along the north shore.

We visit the North Shore at least a couple of times every year and have stayed at a variety of places, including Lutsen Resort. This trip to Lutsen Resort has included one very major disappointing and angering element that will keep us from ever staying here in the future.

While most reputable resorts classify condo units such as these as perhaps ‘Lakefront’, ‘Lakeview’, or ‘Gardenview’, and price them accordingly, Lutsen does not. We were extremely disappointed upon check-in that our unit is at the back of the resort and has a view primarily of the backs of all of the other units along with their parking lots. During the day, rather than a peaceful view of the North Shore we are treated to cars driving around and golf carts shuttling maid and maintenance people all over. At night we have the pleasure of headlights shining in our windows instead of moonlight. Not exactly a ‘North Shore’ experience. For this we were charged the same as for a true lakefront unit with views exclusively of the lake. VAST DIFFERENCE!

When we complained about this to the front desk we were told that indeed the prices for all units are exactly the same and that while in the future we can request to be in a specific unit or avoid a specific unit that this could not be guaranteed. We were not offered any compensation. At most resorts a non-lakefront unit is typically priced about 30% - 40% below a lakefront unit.

There is no mention on their website about their having 2 buildings that are behind the other buildings and these two buildings are also left off the resort map on their website giving the impression that ALL units are either lakefront or at least fronting along the river bluff with more distant views of the lake. This leads me to seriously question the ethics of the owners and operators of this resort.

While in many ways this is a relatively nice resort that we have enjoyed in the past I cannot support a business that lacks ethics, misleads their customers with faulty information on their website, and attempts to charge high rates for units with substandard views (a primary reason many of us visit the North Shore).

We have made Lutsen Resort an annual weekend family retreat for several years now -- have stayed at their Poplar River Condos (my favorite, with the walk down the steps to the main lodge, across the river, for swimming, dining and other activities), as well as their log cabins (a further walk away from the main lodge, but very cozy with full kitchen, deck overlooking Lake Superior, woodburning firestove, and 2 full bedrooms). The dining room is fabulous for a special meal (excellent food and ambience -- make reservations on popular weekends/travel dates), and the bar is convenient for quick sandwiches and salads. Their breakfast buffet on weekends is recommended. The pool is large, great for families, with a sauna and hot tub, as well. They have a variety of activities for kids and families, with XC ski equipment, snowshoes, etc. for guests' use. A shuttle van will take you to the ski hill (downhill skiing) just up the road. Lutsen Resort is our top pick for a family winter weekend along the North Shore, but would be an equally nice retreat for a romantic getaway.

Just returned from a weekend at Lutsen Resort and had a fabulous time. We stayed in the Poplar River Condos and had a King Suite overlooking Lake Superior. We could hear the waves all night long as we slept. It was wonderful. Lighted path down the hill and over a beautiful bridge over the Poplar River to the main lodge. It was a beautiful, romantic walk over and back. The fires on the beach at night and the fireplace and jacuzzi in our room made for a very romantic weekend. The fall color was breathtaking and the dinners up the road in Grand Marais were fabulous as always. Can't wait to go back.

We just came home from a week staying in the Sea Villas. It was a quiet and rustic get away and a great place to relax. Our villa was right on the water and it was amazing to sit on the deck facing the lake and have our coffee in the morning. I do wish we had stayed a bit closer to the main lodge as there are limited things for kids to do at the Sea Villa site and it's three miles to the main lodge. I feel the Sea Villa's are more in favor of adults than children; given the lack of things for kids to do. Lutsen is far from anything though there are many cute little shops and stores along the way to the towns; shop for your groceries in Two Harbors as there are no grocery stores north of there except for mom and pop stores and you will pay high prices for merchandise there. I would recommend going to Grand Marais; a wonderful little town with great places to eat. I would certainly visit the North Shore again but would probably not stay at this resort. While it was quite and rustic, it was not worth the premium price we payed to stay there and there are many, many choices with better locations to stay.

One of the biggest issues with finding a quiet place to stay on the North Shore (and being by Lake Superior) is the noise from highway 61. The road hugs the shoreline and many hotels and "resorts" are just yards from the side of the road.

The main lodge at the Lutsen Resort is down a hill from the road which (along with the lake waves) buffers the noise from the property and creates a very relaxing environment.

My wife and I stayed in one of the condos right by the shoreline. Although the rooms are well-appointed and comfortable, I would recommend asking for an upper unit if you want peace and quiet. The ceilings/floors between the upper and lower units do not provide much sound insulation. When your neighbor above moves a chair, opens a closet or talks loudly, you will hear it! I must qualify that statement by the fact that we stayed right below the "Louderson" family in town for a wedding. I would assume the average Lutsen Resort guest would be a little quieter.

Overall, great place to stay and we will be back!
