“Easy riding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

I live by the Canon Valley Trail which I know very well. This is a pay-to-use trail so having the Root River trail be state managed and not have to deal with buying a pass is a bonus to me (guess I'm already paying for it!).
The trail is nice in that the towns on it all have nice stops and easy places to park. Also, much of it is not very steep so it's easier to bike with young children.
There are some campgrounds on or near the trail if you want to do that. I'm a fan of the state park system - Forestville is nearby and wonderful, but about 8-10 miles from the Preston trailhead. Certainly worthy for a family trip or for couples, too.

“Fantastic Bicycling & Fly Fishing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013 via mobile

My wife and I have come here for years. First it was for the B&Bs and the bicycling, which are great. Then I became a fly fisherman; the trout fishing is fantastic. They spring creek's feeding the Root River are world class. Bring your bicycle and your flyrod. Get up for the morning hatch, bicycle the rest of the day and then catch the evening hatch. Break for dinner at Riverside on the Root. What more could you ask for?

“Choose any part of this trail and you will be happy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

I walk this trail e Rey year and find it is just as nice on foot if not more so. If your legs are reasonably ready to go a 15 or more mile walk will be enjoyable and easy. It is mostly flat. F you want some hills take mile 38 or on the harmony leg mile 12. Both climb about 100f - 250 feet per mile but only for about 1/2 mile or so. The Fountain-Houston is 42+ miles of beauty. at mile 5.5 there is the trail to Harmony of 12 miles. This goes through Preston and then at mile 6.5 follows Camp Creek which is a beautiful trout stream. My favorite part is Either Preston to Mile 13 or Peterson to Rushfird to Houston which has Bluffs FO the Peterson-Rushfird and then pretty much follows the Root River. On this section you will see Bluffs on both side that rise up to 450 feet above the valley.

If you at all like Bluegrass Music do not miss the May and August festivals at Cushon Peak campground. Right on the river and trail at mile 38. Indoors in May for 3 days and outdoors in August for 4 days. Great bargain in music and food and a nic campground if you wish. V resizing Cell service is pretty good and there is WiFi although that is not free.

“Best Place to Live”

I am from Minneapolis and when I discovered the Root River, the Valley, and the Root River Trail, I knew this was where I wanted to retire. Bought a place in Peterson and love it!
