“A Valentine to remember!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

We just got home last night from the hotel after a 2-night stay; 14 th. and 15th. Feb.. The first impression I had was a very warm welcome at reception and the insistence of carrying our bags to our room. The bedroom and bathroom were clean and warm; the portable heater was only used for 5 mins. each night, there was no need for longer. We slept well and the shower was great. The staff were extremely friendly and treated all guests well. Now, the food - WOW!!! Absolutely FANTASTIC!!! We had the Valentine's dinner both nights, which did include a Champagne and amuse bouche, not on the menu but included; both dinners were fantastic! The wine was excellent too and the breakfast on both mornings were delicious! An hotel we hope to visit again. Places to visit in Devon from the hotel:- Honiton, Exmouth and definitely Sidmouth.

What a huge disappointment after reviewing the website (was it even the same hotel we wondered!?). Seldom have I seen such dated rooms & facilities for the rates charged......had they been more reasonable (off season aswell!) then we may have been a little more forgiving. The staff are charming & we were frequently told that work was either being done or planned in, but that hardly compensates. The only work I could see was in the garden, but I would suggest that the interiors are in more urgent need. The bedrooms were uncomfortably cold unless you switched on a portable electric heater, & the bathrooms even more so (on a positive note, the beds are extremely comfortable). The bathrooms were also the most basic I have witnessed in many years, with a basin too small to shave over.....a Premier Inn would seem luxurious, believe me. We ate both dinner & breakfast, both being either unappetising or inedible, and again looking nothing like what is used to tempt on the website. Even though breakfast was included, we just didn't bother on the second morning. They seem very proud of their amuse bouches & silver service, but really should just concentrate on serving guests decent, good quality food. This review may seem harsh, but I simply feel completely ripped off. If you want to revisit the 70's courtesy of Fawlty Towers, then feel free to go ahead & book!

Room Tip: We were in a "Superior", so I should imagine the standard are even worse.......

Dear DLR63,

Thank you for your review of the Deer Park, I was saddened to learn that your recent stay had not met your exceptions, please accept my sincere apologies. On a more positive note I am glad that our team were on hand to deliver the smile and service that you would except from a country house hotel and that the all-important bed was extremely comfortable.

Yes indeed we are currently heavily investing in the Deer Park Country House Hotel and have several projects currently underway and ready to start. As with all developments we try our utmost to ensure minimal impact for our guests and I was happy to read that this was indeed the case for your stay

DLR63 I would very much like the opportunity to discuss all of this with you and indeed gain some more detail of your recent stay. If you would have the time I would welcome an email or call from you.

One of the best overnight stays we have ever had. No joking. We attended for a wine tasting dinner and the whole experience was excellent. The welcome on arrival was warm and friendly as were the staff for our entire stay. I couldn't help but comment on the cleanliness of our room which looked out over the most amazing view of parkland and even better weather wouldn't have improved our stay. We were able to walk around the grounds a little, following breakfast which, again, was excellent. I would certainly recommend the kippers! We heard of plans to improve the hotel and the driveway leading to it which will, I am sure, elevate the hotel enormously but I sincerely hope it will not lose any of its charm. Everything felt so warm and friendly but don't take my word for it, try it for yourself and enjoy. Ask about plans for the hotel yourself and you will be impressed.

Room Tip: Speak with Reception when booking and ask them. They are the ones who know.

The hotel is set in glorious grounds, the staff are friendly and the food is wonderful. It has so much potential to be a magnificent place but you instead of feeling wowed, you almost feel a little frustrated that it doesn't quite meet the mark.
The arrival sets the tone, having a long grand driveway to an Exclusive boutique hotel in the middle of Devon country sounds so impressive, in this reality it is more of a hindrance, being so full of potholes you almost feel a little sick as you approach the house!
The current amenities listed for the hotel, including swimming pool and tennis court, are out of action and not currently available to use. If these are not to be regenerated they ought to get rid of them altogether as it brings down the standard of the hotel.
The main house accommodation is spacious, but the bathrooms are a little dated.
The mews accommodation is dreadful, these need updating so badly. Even a superficial makeover would make all the difference. Fresh and modern linen, new bathroom fittings, paintwork, just general updating.
In essence the Deer Park has huge potential and I cannot fault the service or quality of food ( and the food is particularly good) , but if you are expecting a polished fine Devon country hotel, it doesn't quite do it. I believe some investment has been made to the Deer Park but there is still a way to go.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the mews cottages, take the main house only.

Dear Smithson392

Thank you for your review of Deer Park which gives me a great opportunity to inform you of all of our plans here at the Deer Park.

Indeed the driveway is more like an off road experience but we are going to spoil everyone’s fun and have the entire drive re surfaced in April, however today we are filling those pot holes with a temporary fix which will get us through to the big day!

The recent refurbishment did indeed address the quality of main house rooms which are fabulous and the make over you describe is planned for the Mews rooms which will be happening in the next few months.

We are also investing heavily in the gardens and grounds with a new Italian garden and wonderful fountain which is in the middle of construction and will be completed by mid March.
A new car park, an upgrade to our walled garden and many other smaller improvements will certainly put Deer Park on the map.

Thank you again for your positive comments regarding the food and the staff, I can only agree we have a super team at Deer Park who are really raising their game to deliver Great British service!!

We hope to see you again soon to share our fabulous improvements

We stayed two nights in early January 2013. This was our first visit to Deer Park. The entrance road was extremely long and rough, but the weather had been atrocious and we were told that the road was about to be upgraded.
Given the reasonable price - winter break rate - I had expected that possibly the hotel might be a little fadded round the edges, but it most certainly is not. We were delighted with our room which was beautifully furnished, with lovely fabrics and a large, well-presented bathroom. The staff are extremely warm and accomodating and the public rooms are very comfortable.
The only slight downside was the evening menu. This place is not for foodies. The menu was basic and bordering on retro - garlic mushrooms, sirloin steak garni, creme caramel. However in fairness every course was extremely well-cooked and the food was enjoyable - always a treat to find a chef who can cook a blue steak. If you like plain food you will be very happy. If the menu was upgraded it could put the hotel into a different league, as the decor and service are really good quality.

Room Tip: Room 8 is the hotel's best room. Its not a suite but the room is large and light, decorated in s...

The meal "you could eat with your eyes!" It was wholesome and just delicious - ticked all the boxes.
The outside temperature was minus 1C, so disappointed not as warm as expected in hotel, despite log fires.
The long approach driveway is in desperate need of repair.
Despite the negaitives we shall most definately frequent this hotel again

We returned again to The Deer Park in January 2013, and were not disappointed.
The friendly staff, fantastic food and comfortable ambience all added up to a great chillout, wish we could have stayed for longer.
I'm not sure how a previous customer "Howgill" could criticise the food -maybe they should have gone to Macdonalds instead?!
We shall definitely return and continue to recommend it to our more discerning friends.

Room Tip: Ask Georgie for an upgrade to a superior room.
