“Top Notch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2014

My wife and I stayed here while I had a job interview. The caretakers at the time (Bonnie and Cal) were super nice people and very accommodating. The room we got was very cozy and comfortable. The price was quite a value for what all you get. The breakfasts were very tasty. If I ever make it back that way, that is where I'll stay.

We stayed here in Aug 2013 and we found it to be a lovely B&B. The rooms are lovely and everything has been thought about to make your sty memorable. Karen and Ron are lovely hosts and very welcoming and there is a wine and cheese evening every day for people to get to know each other. The breakfast was wonderful and the whole stay very relaxing. We would definitely return if we ever go to Grand Rapids again.

We could not have asked for a better place to stay while riding the Mesabi Trail for 3 days. Everything was absolutely outstanding from the warm welcome, the comfortable suites, the delicious breakfasts, and the informative help on the area attractions. Karen and Ron are gracious hosts and their home is the most comfortable B&B we have ever stayed at.

Room Tip: Each room is uniquely decorated, and all are extremely well done.

We stayed here 3 days ago when we rode the Mesabi Trail. The bed was so comfortable and the breakfast was incredible!

The gardens were in full bloom so a stroll through the several gardens on the property was relaxing after pedaling 60 miles.

We will be back.

Room Tip: The first floor room gives you your own entrance.

This B&B is in town so there will be some traffic noise of cars going up and down the street. It was quiet during the night but noise of cars passing started about 6:30 a.m. This likely affected us more than the other guests because our room was right at the front of the house, with a private entrance off of the front veranda. We requested a room with no stairs, and were glad we did. The access to the room was great and it was very easy to bring in and out the luggage.
The bathroom was quite tiny, and the shower small so that it was hard not to get water all over the floor. But this was compensated by having a large bedroom and a separate sitting area with TV. We enjoyed having so much space. However, when it came to where to put suitcases and set out our toiletries, there was a problem.
There was a entire wall of drawers and cupboards beside the bed, but they were full of the owners antiques and collectibles. As often happens with B&Bs, the owner of this B&B has lots of cute collectibles that she decorates the rooms with. There was a dresser but it was largely unuseable. The top was covered with ornaments and a guest book to sign, so there was little space for guests to place their toiletries or personal items. We moved some items off it to make a bit of room for our own things.
I brought a small chair from the sitting room, and placed it by the bed as a beside table. We put our suitcases on two of the armchairs in the sitting room. We draped dressing gowns over the metal heater in the room. I did not see a closet for our use - but maybe I missed it.
On the upside, Karen and Ron are so welcoming and friendly that you feel right at home She served an excellent breakfast and there is a charming garden around the house. Billy is a friendly dog who loves attention, and as we were missing our little dog which we had to leave at home, he did get quite a few pats from us.

Room Tip: We had the Captains Quarters on the main floor, with a private entrance off the veranda. Very handy...

I can't recall when I last stayed at a B&B right in town, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This lovely home in a quiet neighborhood did not disappoint.
I was happy with the Captain's Room downstairs. Just off of the dining area, it was very convenient to get refills of hot water for tea - and a couple more homemade peanut butter cookies.
The room itself ( along with all the others I toured) was designed nicer than a model home, yet not over the top or too kitchy / themed as sometimes is seen in B&B's.
Bed was very comfortable. Flat-screen TV was on a rolling low wicker cabinet so it could be viewed from bed, or from the chairs in the adjacent sitting room which looked out onto the front yard and porch.I didn't need to turn on the portable radiator but found it was just the right height as a lap top desk when sitting in the comfortable wing back chair (!). There was a proper desk and chair in this area as well.
Having gutted and remodelled a large house and a condo in the last few years, I was pleased to see the great attention paid to finishing detail. The walk in shower had amazing and beautiful tile work. The young man staying upstairs also remarked on the fine workmanship in their room.
Breakfast was delicious and hearty, consisting of individual sausage omelettes, fresh fruit and a fruit pastry akin to a berry coffee cake.
Ron and Karen were very upbeat and friendly and it was a delight to talk with them. I also enjoyed catering to the whims of their dog Billy, who obviously needed a full-time belly-rubber. Not sure if they are posting such a position, however.
When in the area, you can't go wrong if you decide to stay in this attractive home.
