Our son had a outdoor wedding with 200 guests on July 9, 2008 at Silver Rapids Lodge on the grounds of "The Retreat". The accomodations were clean and comfortable and many of the 200 guests stayed at the various cabins and motel units at the resort. The cabins and motel units are of the older variety but are very comfortable and clean and we were very satisfied with our accomodations. The setting is beautiful and peaceful and is conveniently located 4 miles from Ely for quick trips to town.
Gary, the owner and the staff were wonderful in trying to do everything possible to accomodate our large group of 200 wedding guests. We had a grooms dinner for 80 at "The Retreat" and this was an excellent facility to be used for large groups with its backyard / patio area directly off of the walkout basement and full kitchen.
On the day of the wedding, SEVERE storms were forecasted with rain and wind. The wedding was to be held on the lakeshore and reception in a HUGE tent we had rented. We all were concerned about possible power outages and rain runoff getting into the tent. Gary (the owner) was always a step ahead of us in forseeing any possible problems and working to resolve it. He contacted an electrician, had generators in case we needed them, dug ditches to divert rain runoff, laid groundcover in the tent, provided shuttle service from parking lot................HE and his staff were wonderful and worked hard and diligently to ensure the wedding with its 200 guests went smoothly. We can not thank them enough for all they did and sincerely recommend this resort to anyone who is looking for a place to have a large group of people for a gathering with casual and comfortable accomodations in beautiful and natural surroundings. Silver Rapids Lodge is not fancy but is comfortable and clean and a great place to have a wedding or reunion. The outdoors is beautiful. Gary and his staff were absolutely excellent and we thank them for making the wedding with 200 guests in the middle of a rainstorm a success! Great place!

  • Liked — friendly and helpful staff / beautiful outdoors

We sayed a this place in one of the cabins they claimed was lakeside. Well to put it simply it is more like roadside not to mention old and rundown. Our friends stayed in the campground which is more like a sardine can along a busy road. The food was okay but nothing to rave about and the owners, whoever they are were never around to help or assist in any way. Better off checking out other places..

We stayed in a cabin for 2 nights and were disappointed. The bed in the downstairs bedroom was extremely uncomfortable - it curves in the middle and I could feel the springs. The twin beds upstairs were more comfortable. I spent the half of the 2nd night on the floor in front of the gas stove. The website said the cabin had a wood burning stove, but there were burn marks on the carpet from the wood stove and it has been replaced with a gas fireplace. The advertised jacuzzi tub is nothing spectacular, kind of dingy and not much bigger than a standard bathtub. When I turned on the jets, out came a bunch of sand and lint. The cabin was very small. The food in the lodge was pretty good and the place was kept up okay.. I would recommend checking out accomodations before staying there - for the price the cabin was definitely not worth it.

  • Liked — the two surrounding cabins were closed for the season
  • Disliked — very small cabin/living room area, uncomfortable bed, wood stove replaced with gas

We put together a family reunion on my wife’s side at Silver Rapids from 8-18 – 8-25. I’m originally from Ely (left 30 years ago) and the rest of the 25 family members, who were coming from Minnesota, Texas & California, had never been in this area before. We needed a variety of accommodations, renting 3 cabins, 3 motel suites, 3 tent sites and 2 full hookup sites for pull behind campers.

This resort is all about location. Situated on a point between Garden & White Lakes, the setting is beautiful. The resort is only 4 miles to town, which was very convenient for those that wanted to go in.

The motel unit in which my wife I and stayed had pretty much everything we needed. Kitchenette, fridge, dining table, double bed, and bath. The deck overlooked Garden Lake to some beautiful sunrises. These units are basic, but CLEAN. The bed wasn’t very comfortable, but I could live with it. No TV and no Air. Didn’t need either. The evening cooled into the 50’s and the ceiling fan kept the cool air moving around.

The cabins were very well oriented, most with very nice lake views and fireplaces. It worked out great for those in our group who had kids.

The tent sites we had overlooked Garden Lake, close to the motel. The older kids stayed in these. The sites down by White Iron in the front of the resort are one on top of each other. I would avoid these if possible.

The pull in sites were a little cramped and didn’t have a lake view. But it worked fine for us, as those staying there mostly came down and hung out with us at the cabins or by the marina.

Speaking of the Marina, this is as good as it gets. 6 long docks with a board walk in between. I brought my 22ft pontoon and kept it down there, where the water is very calm. The resort had an excellent landing to get the boat in and an open lot to store the trailer. No docking or storage fees!!

The owners of this resort is a husband/wife team that are from the Ely area. They know the area and were always available if you needed something. We had no issues whatsoever and enjoyed talking with them when they had the chance.

We did not eat any meals at the restaurant, so can’t comment of that. They do have a Friday Night Fish Fry that looked great. The bar is full service and you can carry your drinks throughout the resort. The whole bar restaurant has a very Up North feel and atmosphere.

This resort is not about 5 star accommodations & dining. That would be hard to find in the Ely area. It’s a great setting in a gorgeous area. The view of channel into Garden Lake is no different than you would see anywhere in the BWCA (with the exception of a few cabins down the lake).

I would personally ignore any previous reviews during the old ownership. This place is well taken care of, has most everything anyone would need and I would highly recommend it if you are looking for something in the Ely area that says: Hey, I am up north. The look, the feel, the smells, the friendliness, the scenery - Its all here.
