“Decent Option in Canal Park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

I have stayed at this hotel several times. Overall, it's a good experience. The location can't be beat - right on the water and next to the aerial lift bridge. There's always lots of people around walking and going to the various (chain) restaurants and shops in the area. The biggest issue with the hotel is the noise - the walls do seem to be thin so that you hear talking in other rooms. And the closing/slamming of the doors - this is so constant that it cannot just be the result of a few rude people, but instead is the construction of the building and/or the materials used. The breakfast selection is adequate with fruit, pastries, waffles, cereal, juices, etc. The egg options were obviously pre-formed disks with or without cheese on them - not very appetizing. The seating for breakfast is rather crowded and it's hard to walk around the room, especially if people have high chairs or small children with them. The rooms are nice - I've always gotten a suite when I have been here. It appears that half of the hotel has rooms that are slightly larger with a sitting area in them, and then the other half of the hotel are actual suite rooms. The front desk staff have always been friendly and helpful. And this is noteworthy as I have been there for a conference at the DECC when many people were staying at the hotel and checking in or out at the same time. The free internet in the room is a welcome perk. Have not used the pool, but it looks to be pretty small. There is plenty of parking, and they monitor the lot so that only hotel guests are allowed to leave their vehicles. The total cost is a bit pricey, but reflects supply and demand for the location. Overall, I would recommend this hotel to other travelers and would certainly consider it when I return to Duluth.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us! I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your time in Duluth. We certainly love our location, and would be more than happy to recommend a local restaurant (or several!) within walking distance on your next visit. Our rooms are all considered suites as they all have a sofa sleeper, fridge and microwave, though we do have balcony rooms in our "new addition" that were added on in 2009. These aren't necessarily larger, but the addition of the balcony can feel more spacious. We are very excited to be undergoing some major renovations later this fall and winter to upgrade and enhance the rooms in our main section. Our balcony rooms are often considered to be a more quiet option for those sensitive to noise, and we ask that any unusual or excessive noise be reported to our staff so we can rectify the situation as we want all of our guests to have a quiet and relaxing experience. Thanks again for your kind review! Please let me know if I can be of any assistance in planning your next visit to Duluth.

This is my annual review from our annual trip.

Location cannot be beat, although this time we saved money by forgoing the lake view. But the convenience of not having to hunt for or pay for parking, and being able to walk all over Canal Park is exceptional. I was recovering from a bike accident so my range was about a half mile and that was not a problem.

Room was clean and comfortable. Price was about right for the market.

This was a pretty busy weekend (Northshore Inline Marathon), and the breakfast room was packed Saturday and Sunday. But I counted at least four staff working the room on Sunday--it was clean and well stocked.

Staff was consistently friendly and competent.

Room Tip: The basic decision here is lake side versus city side. My favorite is second floor lake side.

Room and bed were very comfortable. Free breakfast, waffles, fruit, eggs, hard boiled eggs, sausage, toast, bagels, yogurt, juice, hot drinks coffee, tea, chocolate, french vanilla and chocolate vanilla. Hotel is on the lake and the lakewalk is right outside in the back. We were told it is 4.2 miles long. Beautiful walk. They also have happy hour with free appetizers one night it was mini tacos and the next night they had chicken nuggets. Beer was $4.00.

We just spent 2 nights here and were impressed from the moment we walked through the front door. We chose a lakeside suite with a balcony and were rewarded with a fantastic room. The room itself was clean and comfortable. I liked small touches in the room like the bathroom nightlight and the great pictures of Gooseberry Falls and the feather beds and the bedside lamp that could be dimmed to allow me to read while others slept. With our collection of travelling electronics (cell phones, iPads, computers, camera batteries) there were plenty of electric outlets to plug into. The sitting area was most comfortable and handy with of 3 of us sharing the room. I loved the balcony and the chance to sit and watch the ships maneuver through the Canal. The location of the hotel was perfect. I could go for an early morning walk around Canal Park and along the shores of Lake Superior. And when it was time to eat we had numerous restaurants to choose from. The evening bar was also a nice touch. The young lady made me the perfect martini ... and I enjoyed it out on the patio watching Lake Superior.

Room Tip: If you want to watch the lake be sure to get a lakeside room. For families ... the suites provide p...

I've stayed in Canal Park at the Comfort Suites many times and never been disappointed. The Front Desk staff are always pleasant (unlike many others), the breakfast is certainly way above the norm, and the area is beautiful. We walked the boardwalk and then over the bridge....lots of places to stop and enjoy the view.
The newer area of the hotel seems to have the only balconies (at a price - of course), but again...well worth it!
I would never hesitate to stay here, whether it's for only a night, or a few extra days.

We had great service from the minute we walked in. The hotel was imaculate. They had a bar after 5pm and free appetizers. Theyy have a large breakfast buffet that was very nice. The view was spectacular. The hotel was quiet, relaxing and everyone was very friendly. We could see hte ships come and go and sit on the balcony and peple watch. It is located in an area that you can walk to most anything you want to do. Our room was around $215.00 per night but it was worth it. We stayed in a horrible hotel the night before in Deerwood MN and it was 100.00 per night. They had mold, holes in sheetrock, tiles just hanging in the bathroom and sheets that did not fit so you were up all night putting them back on. Even at double the money this hot;el was well worth it. We had a great experience and can not wait to go back.

Thanks so much for your review! I'm glad to hear that we were able to make your stay worthwhile. So sorry to hear about your unpleasant stay in Deerwood; that sounds like it was incredibly uncomfortable. Our location is tough to beat, and the ships are so close by--I'm glad to hear that you were able to take advantage of the area and enjoy your time with us. Please let me know if I can assist you in any future travel plans to Duluth!

As said in other reviews, the Comfort Suites is right in the thick of things for people want to experience the lift bridge, Edna G, Maritime Museum, etc.

The lake facing rooms have wonderful views of Lake Superior.

We stayed on the 3rd floor which is served by only one elevator so at times it took a while to get on one. The second floor is served by a stairs in addition to the single elevator.

The breakfast food buffett was good (for this type of hotel food). The lines for food were relatively long at times but generally less than five minutes.

The staff was friendly and the rooms were clean. We'd stay there again if visiting Duluth.
