“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

The rooms are lovely and very well appointed, not missing a thing, the views are stunning, the breakfasts were scrumptious and "over the top", the grounds facing the lake are gorgeous, the snack bar available 24 hrs was a real treat, and the hosts are the best. This B&B is one of the best there is. Treat yourself to this fabulous property, you won't be disappointed. Go in the warm seasons so you can eat outside.

Room Tip: You should definitely get a "room with a view" of the lake.

As the other reviewers described, we were greeted at the door and given a full tour of the property including the stocked drink and snack bars. Although the inn has a 4-6 pm check in policy the owners were kind enough to accommodate our request for a 6:45 arrival.

We stayed in the Aerial Bridge Suite which features a view of the water and the property's "hidden garden." Binoculars are thoughtfully provided so one may take full advantage of the scenery outside the large picture window. The modern room's amenities include a wonderfully plush king-sized platform bed and glorious bathroom with a jet tub and walk in shower.

We took full advantage of the beachfront location in the outdoor lounge chairs. We walked along the lakeshore collecting sea glass. We also walked to canal park to shop, eat dinner and enjoy the other attractions.

After a wonderful sleep, breakfast was served outdoors at a single table to encourage chit-chat among guests. The weather was phenomenal. The food was only okay. I am a bit of a "foodie" and would not give the meal high marks. Luckily, the menu changes, so future guests may have a better experience in this regard.

All in all I was thrilled to have stumbled on this gem. I'll visit again.

Room Tip: We loved our room and would recommend it.

There is no other way to describe this B&B. The location on the shore of Lake Superior with the aerial lift bridge in view, beautufully landscaped gardens and patio areas is so relaxing. The breakfast was good and we were able to sit out on the patio area to eat as the weather was sunny and warm. I would highly recommend this is as a place to stay in Duluth.....you will not be disappointed!

Solglimt offers what every B & B should, a good mix of hospitality and privacy. Guests are warmly greeted and given a tour which includes the kitchen with a small fridge containing drinks and the living room which houses a sidebar with cookies, nuts and other small snacks. When we asked about putting our ice pack in the freezer, we were given a frozen pack to use during our stay and an admonishment to exchange it when we needed another. All guests are served breakfast at 9 a.m. and it is a 3 course affair. Come hungry and ready to exchange ideas about what to do and where to eat. The lovely lakeside gardens have some small private spaces. All rooms have their own bathrooms and sitting space and are individually appointed. Canal Park, where you can catch the trolley or enjoy wonderful food at the Lake Avenue Cafe, is with walking distance. We found that we could easily attend a play at the Depot and walk back via a footbridge which connects the Arena area to Canal Park. Don't wait; choose your room and make a reservation.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Harbor View Suite which has its own deck, but it is on the street side and the view...

We have only been to Solglimt on one occasion and nothing really stood out as exceptional or bad from our first experience. I do want to let people know that we recently scheduled a one night stay and due to a family emergency (my MIL fell and was taken to the hospital) we had to cancel our stay. We told them that we completely understood the need to charge us the $202 dollars for the night and hopefully we could come back for a visit another time. Mary's exact response was "Bummer for you all around" and she proceeded to charge our credit card the full amount. While the money is not a big issue, I think her response speaks volumes. If you are planning to stay with them just beware of their "bummer for you" cancellation policy and know that should an emergency arise you will not be offered a certificate or discount for a future stay.

We had no way of knowing that there was a medical emergency for this guest because they never told us.They never asked us to work with them. They didn't even call us on the phone they sent us an email to cancel after our check in time. Here are their exact words " We had to go back to the cities unexpectedly and won't be coming tonight. We know you'll charge us and understand completely. Hopefully we can come visit another time. Thank you."
I am sorry the guest felt my response was inappropriate, I meant it to be a condolence, not being snide. Nobody wants their vacation cut short. No Innkeeper can make a customer happy and work with them when the customer is not forthcoming with the reason for their cancellation. We charged them because that is what they told us to do.

By chance, we read about this place in 2006, and decided to give it a try. We had never stayed at a B&B before, so considered it an adventure we couldn't pass up. Little did we know that we would return at least twice a year, and have racked up over 25 nights there over the years. We've tried all different seasons and the experience is always wonderful. How can you go wrong with 5 miles of sand beach and the largest freshwater lake in the world right out out the back door? The food is always fresh, local and tasty. There are 3 rooms that face the big lake. One even has skylights, so the full moon shines through like a floodlight when you're there at the right time. We never get tired of watching the big ships come in and out through the canal. If you're so inclined, you can walk across the Aerial Lift Bridge into Canal Park and find lots of shops and places to eat. Or head out Scenic Hwy 61 along the lake for some other places to eat while enjoying the scenery. Brian and Mary are gracious hosts and a pleasure to get to know. You can even get iPhone/iPad lessons if needed! Highly recommended for time away!

Room Tip: If you want to look at Lake Superior from your room, book the Aerial Bridge, Park Point or Lake Supe...

My wife and I recently stayed at Solglimt for two nights for a special occasion. We had seen the great reviews on tripadvisor and were glad that they still had an opening when all other top reviewed B&B's in Duluth were full a couple weeks prior to our stay.

Our room, the Harborview suite, was very nice. It had plenty of space, a fireplace, whirlpool tub, nice seating area, and a TV with DVD player. Our only complaints about the room were minor--as the name would indicate, the view isn't the desired one--of Superior. Additionally, we were somewhat disappointed by the quality of the older television and the fact that the DVD remote didn't work, even after having the batteries replaced. This made watching the TV series on DVD that we brought with impossible, without the options needed on the remote.

The breakfasts were delicious and filling. They were three courses, a bread/scone of some sort, a fruit dish, and an entree (pancakes one day and an eggs benedict the other, I believe). We were exceedingly pleased with these.

Another nice touch was the snacks/treats that were available at all times during our stay, including soda, cashews, trail mix, fresh baked brownies/bars, etc. We really appreciated this.

Finally, we found the owners to be very friendly and hospitable. We are somewhat hesitant B&B guests, often preferring the anonymity of hotels. However, a really positive B&B experience such as this one will make us reconsider this hesitation in the future.

Room Tip: I would suggest the rooms with a view of Lake Superior!

It is too bad that our guests found fault with our lake shore bed and breakfast and chose to voice their concerns in a public forum rather than giving us a chance to resolve their issues. We did replace the batteries on the DVD remote but they didn’t tell us that that did not fix the problem. We could have replaced the player with a working one if we had known the batteries did not fix the problem. The issue of the view was never mentioned either. Had they have said they were hoping for a Lake Superior view and not a St. Louis Bay/Harbor view we had a room we could have switched them to in order to satisfy their needs. Our Harbor View Suite looks at the Duluth Harbor and St. Louis Bay and we do not advertise it as having a Lake Superior view. Our rooms that do face Lake Superior are advertised as having that view. Our aerial photos on our web site show that there are two different bodies of water and the Aerial Lift Bridge that connects to Park Point which separates the two bodies of water.
