We arrived in Duluth on Thursday around 1 pm. The weather was superb. We loved seeing the tall ships enter the harbor, although, for some reason, we were expecting to see more of the larger ships arriving. The walking/biking path along the lake and harbor were awesome. Everyone appeared to be having a great time. This was our first trip to Duluth...we just had to see the tall bridge go "up" and "down"...and we did. Interestingly, there were very few recreational boaters and no fishing boats? The lake and harbor were sparse in terms of boat traffic. Also, there were no fishermen anywhere...none on the water or shoreline. Are there any fish to be caught in the Lake Superior and Duluth area, or has this become another "industrial" environmental casualty? We stumbled onto Grandmas and saw outdoor seating on the upper deck overlooking the lake, channel, and lift bridge. We were fortunate to get a table. The service, beer, and cocktails were acceptable. The deck menu was brief but suitable. Both of us shared deep fried onion rings and the fish & chips (substituted fries). The fish appeared to be Pollack right out of the frozen food bag from (???). It was a perfect, sunny summer afternoon on the deck until the rain arrived, got worse, then stayed throughout most of Friday. :-(
Oh well. We've seen the bridge and eaten enough fried, processed stuff to last for quite some time. No problem.
