“"To short a stay"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

Our stay at the South Pier Inn was just too short. We had a canal view room close to the bridge. We wanted to stay "right in the action" as we were only there for one night. And we were. A very nice room. Large with a fireplace and seperate bedroom. Very comfortable for our family. The view was incredible. It was nice to be able to walk to Canal Park and the lighthouse. Just wish we could have stayed longer. What a great place!!!

Room Tip: The canal view rooms are very nice with views of the ships coming and going.

My husband and I stayed here by pure happenstance and loved every second! We decided last minute to stay in Duluth for the night while we waited for freighters to pass under the bridge. Luckily for us the Inn was literally on our left. The desk clerk gave me rates, restaurant suggestions, and answered a few questions before the bridge was down again. We chose a room overlooking the harbor and dinner at Grandma's. The room was spacious, clean, and quiet. Great location with spectacular views! Employees were helpful and polite. Thanks for a wonderful evening and a delicious morning. Worth every penny. Wouldn't change a thing.

Room Tip: Windows are large and provide great views. The breakfast was simple but very tasty.

Great accommodations like others have said many times. Within walking distance of everything in Canal Park and the old downtown businesses on Superior and First streets. This IS the Duluth experience. We started on the south side then moved to a room with a jacuzzi and fireplace on the last night. Very romantic and private....you can shut the vertical blinds or set them to see the view while still having privacy. The ships and small boats coming and going make for a very unique experience that you can't get in many places. The staff is very helpful and friendly. I suppose it costs more than usual but the Tallships coming at the end of July would be an amazing time and most of the activities are a short walk from South Pier Inn.

Great location right beside the Aerial Lift Bridge. We had a room overlooking the harbor with a fantastic view, could watch the ships in the harbor. It was a quaint room but had a whirlpool, fireplace, and queen bed. Perfect for a romantic weekend getaway! They even provide extras like binoculars to watch the ships and robes. Nice deck overlooking the harbor too. One way to improve would be to have a better breakfast selection. Would definitely return!

Room Tip: Ask for canal view if available. Harbor view was nice also.

Although we did not have the "view" side of the building, we found our room to be quiet, large enough, well furnished and comfortable. The continental breakfast was standard, the coffee was plentiful and good. The staff was very pleasant. What was outstanding was that the gracious and charming owner was there to greet guests and was brimming with travel and tourist information. She seemed to enjoy herself as much as the appreciative travellers. What a far cry from all the franchised motel chains!

Room Tip: You could ask for lake view.

We stayed at the South Pier Inn for one night. Wish we could have stayed longer. We had a very nice room. The location is convenient and the bridge right outside the door is very photogenic. One of the owners was in the lobby while we ate breakfast, and she is a valuable source of much information. If you have time, drive north to Gooseberry Falls. It's very impressive. Also, The Depot in downtown Duluth is worth looking into.

All the staff were very helpful. And, our room was quiet, which is important to us light sleepers.

This is the second time that I have stayed at this hotel and it was just as great as the last. If you have a view of the lake it is very scenic but if not, the room makes up for it. Always super clean and everything works. Cannot recommend this one enough. Small number of rooms so make sure you have a reservation.
