This was a nice stay, very cool to be right next to the pier. As we expected you can hear trafffic crossing the bridge at night and the room was fairly bright at night due to the bridge being lit up. This was not a huge problem for us, but I know some people need it to be very dark in order to sleep well. Those people might want to try the harbor side of the hotel.

The breakfast was well under par, coffee and donuts. I would expect more from ANY hotel charging over $100 a night. Speaking of the rate, check for a coupon online before your stay. We found one that got us the rate of $109.

I would reccommend this hotel to friends and family with the above mentioned concerns.

Always our choice when in Duluth,and we've been here since its opening. Rooms are comfortable and spacious. View is without peer. Can almost touch ships going thru the canal. Owners are gracious and involved.

My husband and I are frequent visitors to Duluth and this is our favorite place to stay. We always book a canal view room as we love to watch the ships come and go, no matter what time, day or night.

The rooms are clean and comfortable. Tastefully decorated. The up stairs rooms have just enough area for two people. If you prefer to spread out a bit I would recommend the lower level suite. It has a separate bedroom, wet bar, and large living room area with fold out sofa. Perfect for when you have more than two people staying.

Some things they could improve on from our last stay... Should upgrade the pillows, a bit small and turned into a bag of sand in the middle of the night. Stock more towels in the bathroom. With the jacuzzi, guests will go through more towels.

Coffee and Continental breakfast is available in the lobby. We usually walk across the bridge to get breakfast but have stopped in for coffee. Nice amenity.

All in all this is a unique place to stay, no better view of the ships and the beautiful Duluth skyline. You can watch all the Canal Park action from your balcony.

We will continue to make South Pier Inn our "home base" when we stay in Duluth.

Last year on 11/28/11 my fiancé and I got our usual room at the SPI to watch the ships fight the gals of November on Lake Superior. We decided on very short notice that it would be fun to get married on the lift bridge so we found a pastor who was willing to walk out on the bridge to marry us. She brought her husband as a witness but we needed one more person so the manager of the Inn gladly walked out and witnessed out brief ceremony, (It was cold but not too bad out that day). Later that night after we returned to our room we were greeted by a tray with chocolates, a bottle of wine with classes and even a little toy boat with a note of congratulations. It was so sweet and thoughtful and beyond what they needed to do for us. As for the rooms, (this is upcoming year will be our fourth year in a row at SPI), they are impeccable. Clean, clean, clean with views you can't beat. The whirlpools are big (My husband and I are both over six feet tall and fit in it comfortable together;) and gets as hot as you can handle it. We have never heard any other guests talking or TV. Watching the ships go in and out from the tub with the fire place on and the door cracked is a little slice of heaven!
