“Great weather for an August get away.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

Location, location, location was fabulous. Our deck was only 75 yards from the lift bridge. That is what makes this hotel worth the money. Room was a little tired, but clean. For the price they could update a few things like the linens, grout in the bathroom tile and clean the spots in the carpet. Our room had two chairs but they did not match so it made me feel like it was not a "boutique" hotel but a run of the mill hotel. Just a few details would make the difference. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Loved the fact that we could walk to restaurants and the beach.

Room Tip: Ask for a canal view room.

My wife and I just returned from a two night stay at the South Pier Inn. Room was average to above average, very nice and clean. The amenities were just average. No real bells and whistles, but still nice. View was fantastic! That's what makes this hotel worth the extra money. If you go to Duluth and want to experience twin ports and canal park, this is the place to stay. My only complaint was the WiFi service was pretty much non-existent. Even after having the front desk reset the router, we still had to sit in the lobby to get a decent WiFi connection.

We usually stay at South Pier Inn in the early part of the season because the price is cheaper
then after Memorial Day. It would be nice if they lowered their prices some because we really enjoy staying there. The coffee is amazing in the lobby. It's a small lobby but nice snacks offered. The jacuzzi and fireplace were so nice. My husband loves watching the ships go by and so close. Again if they lowered the price we would always book there for the year.

After reading the reviews for this hotel on TripAdvisor, I was expecting a special hotel. More like a "motel", the room was nice, but nothing I'd go out of my way to stay in again. Unfortunately, the lower-priced rooms (still not inexpensive, by any means) face the parking lot and don't have much of a view. Our room, on the second floor, faced the parking lot and had no view.
I booked this hotel with the expectation of seeing the lake out a window but guess we would have had to spend a great deal more money per night for that. No free upgrades on empty lake-facing rooms offered; $100 more a night was their best offer. We declined.
The continental breakfast offered was typical motel food, and pretty much required you bring it back to your room as seating was very limited in the office. That's OK, we didn't choose the hotel for the continental breakfast, but again, unless you pay more for a lake view, you may be disappointed.

We recently stayed at SPI for our honeymoon over the 4th of July holiday. Rooms were everything we had hoped for. The views are incredible, bed's comfortable , loved the balcony just to sit and enjoy the scenery.
Love that they will give you a wake up call when the big ships come in, open the door to your balcony and the ships are so close you feel like you could touch them.

Jamie @ the front desk was over the top helpful in so many ways !

We spent one night in Duluth on our way home from Grand Marais and chose this hotel. It was an excellent choice! It is so unique to stay right by the bridge. Loved having binoculars and seeing it all lit up at night! What a spectacular sight! The bed was very comfortable, as were the chairs. Great suite, great view, very friendly and helpful staff....definitely will stay here again. We were only there a short time, and unfortunately didn't get to see a ship come through (apparently one came through at 6:30am while we were sleeping!) but it was still a great place to be. Hopefully next visit we'll be able to stay longer and have more opportunities to enjoy the view!!!
