Owner description: Finished in 1908, this Lake Superior 39-room mansion enjoys a rare, intact collection of original furnishings and art. Because of that, it closely resembles the days when the Congdon family first occupied it. Truly, it is Duluth's answer to Downton Abbey. Situated on a wooded lot, the home boasts spectacular views of Lake Superior, as well as, multiple gardens including formal, flower and vegetable. Guests are also encouraged to explore the carriage house, boat house, stone bridge and pier. Children enjoy the pebbled beach for hours of rock skipping while parents take in a sit on one of Adirondack chairs. Be sure to check out Glensheen as part of your must-do Duluth bucket list.

“Nice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

I have been to the mansion many times throughout the years. It used to be an easy-going, nice trip through the mansion. The tours have changed into a herding-cattle-through-the-house tour now. The tours are scheduled so close together, tours groups are moved too quickly through the house. So sad, because there's so much to see. The grounds tour is lovely, though.

“Beautiful estate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

We had a nice time at the estate, our tour guide was new, so I feel like she skipped a bunch, but she did constantly ask if we had any questions about anything in specific, so I guess we should have been more inquisitive. They didn't mention anything about the murders connected to the house, but that wasn't a big deal, the house is beautiful and worth the visit.

“Very Cool!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

Worth the $15 to tour it!! Just amazing that a house could be built like that over 100 years ago. I wasn't sure about going to it ahead of time, but once we started the tour it was well worth it, even though our tour guide talked way too fast and was hard to understand.

“It takes you back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012

We only did the 3 floor tour due to our time limitations however would have loved to do the 5 floor tour. Almost everything is original to the home and it's just beautiful. It takes you back in time and so much is explained about the family and how they lived, where their wealth came from and what an awesome tour. We were fascinated by the stables and the collection of coaches they had including a sleigh for red wood imported from Russian.

The grounds were magnificent and our only regrets were we would have loved to take more time to walk the grounds. There was a huge arts festival going on all over the grounds so a lot of extra people were there. It was fun to see local items.

Wish we would have had time to take in the movie that they had in the stage coach area near the gift ship but our tour left very quickly and truly had to move up the road if we were going to see the lighthouse.

We have been on many mansion tours and this is probably one of the best with the furnishings.
Just a wonderful piece of history! Thanks for preserving it.

Also there was a murder in the home years ago and there are books out but there is no mention on the tours about it. I hear that when the home was donated that was in the contract that it not be mentioned and it wasn't.

This is a MUST see!!! I'm picky about my 5 stars and this is for sure a top 5 star attraction if you like this type of thing. Just wish we had time to go on the other 2 floors. :(
