We stayed two nights at the Inn on Lake Superior and couldn't have asked for a nicer way to end our vacation. Somehow, we managed to snag a two-bedroom ground-floor lake view family suite on just a day's notice. While more than we usually spend for a room, it was absolutely worth it! It's a fabulous location in the canal district...great for just walking around central Duluth and watching the ships come and go.
The suite was HUGE...with two queen beds in the kid's room, a king bed in the parent's room, and a door in-between. Each room had its own flat-screen TV so there was no (or limited) arguing as to what to watch. The king room had a patio just outside the lakeside door and a fantastic view of Lake Superior, with super-easy access to the walkway/path to the canal.
The room was absolutely spotless upon our arrival and comes with a fridge & microwave. Although there is still only one bathroom to be shared amongst the family, it was handy having the extra sink outside the bathroom for shaving, brushing teeth, etc even while someone else was showering. Being on the ground floor and only two rooms over from the outside door and stairwell, I thought noise might be an issue...but it was not to be. Outside noise did not penetrate the room at all.
Although the breakfast area is quite large, it's a big hotel with lots of families (at least in the summer). Make sure you get there early unless you like standing in line. By going half-an-hour earlier the second day (8:30 AM instead of 9:00 AM), we probably saved ourselves 15 minutes in line. However, despite all the people, we didn't have a problem finding a place to sit and eat either day.
The breakfast choices are quite extensive, with waffles and at least one other hot selection each day in addition to the usual cereals, yogourts, carbs, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, etc. Gluten-free bread was also available upon request...something we tend to notice as one member of our family is on a gluten-free diet.
The pool isn't huge for a hotel this size so it does tend to get crowded with kids (at least in the summer)...we managed to get in a quick swim during an off-peak time when it wasn't too bad. The adjoining hot tub is a pretty good size.
Check-in and check-out were both quick and efficient...and there always seemed to be enough clerks to handle the large number of guests. The small store next to the front desk had an adequate supply of munchies and drinks for our late-night requirements...and they were reasonably priced, too!
