“Tasty ice cream”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

A quick (30 second) walk from Fitger's Hotel and we enjoyed ordering ice cream from the smallest brick ice cream shop ever! There is no dining place except for two picnic tables, and this place was busy. Be prepared to stand or walk and eat your ice cream. Everyone's order was tasty and it satisfied us after a long, warm summer day.

“Home of the $6.25 malt”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

The butterscotch malt I got from Portland Malt Shoppe was good, but certainly not worth $6.25! Sure, they try to gussy it up by sticking a wafer in it, squirting a pile of whip cream on top, and plopping a cherry in it. But you're still paying a ridiculous amount for some ice cream, milk, malt powder, and flavoring. I've had malts elsewhere that were just as good if not better; heck, I can make one at home myself that's pretty darn good.

I was also disappointed to notice they use either Barq's or Mug (can't remember which) for their root beer floats. I thought it was common knowledge that A&W root beer is the brand to use for root beer floats?!

I think Portland Malt Shoppe is cashing in on their great location.

“Could have been great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013 via mobile

Cute building, so many choices. We stopped to get a malt before going on the ship tour. Waited in line, ordered, waited again and the left with our malts. The young man (teenager) who made them did not mix them well. Mine had clumps of malt powder throughout the entire malt and my husbands had raspberry syrup/flavoring around the outside and plain vanilla ice cream in the middle. I had black raspberry truffle and my husband had raspberry. I think they could have been delicious if mixed properly. Might give them another try next time we are in town.

“Best Malts in Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

It's a Duluth Summer tradition. You know summer is here when the Malt Shoppe opens. The line is worth it! Take it down to the lakewalk and peoplewatch!

“A Large Customer Crowd”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

Looking out of our Fitger's Hotel room northern facing window, we noticed a steady stream of people coming and going from a small building on the lake front and perhaps an estimated 15-25 people at any given time.We decided to investigate and found out the popular attraction was a malt shop. This particular day was windy, with a cool breeze coming off Lake Superior, so cooling off with ice cream wasn't needed.

The Portland Malt Shoppe primarily sells ice cream products. Since there was a large crowd on a chilly day, we decided we needed to try three of their malts, all of which were quite delicious. We are certainly glad we noticed this crowd and look forward to another visit soon.
