“Friendly staff, late breakfast, comfortable rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

Check-in is a little awkward, I could tell I was being a bit of a bother -they couldn't put us in one room for three nights so we had to move around (not a big deal!). The first night our room was perfect, we will definitely be requesting that room from now on. The second night the room we were placed in was totally tiny, but we got lucky and moved to a different room (we stayed there for the next two nights) -it was nice.
They have a nice fire pit area, a play set for children, and TONS of bikes. One family zoo pass for two hour max -it worked fine for us with 'Boo at the Zoo'. They also sell discounted Spirit Mountain passes! Bonus!! We enjoyed our stay and will be back!

Room Tip: Request a corner room -much more spacious!

We needed a place to stay after attending a motorcycle rally at Spirit Mountain. Willard Munger Inn appears to be an older motor inn style motel. One level, park in front of your room. The room was small with a queen sized bed, micro, frig, small bath with a stand up shower. Cabin/north woods decor. Mattress was comfortable and amenities adequate. I believe they have free bike rentals for the Willard Munger Trail, also free zoo passes and a very limited continental breakfast. Seems like a lot of college age people work the front desk...need some social skills. Guy who checked me in slid me my key...and said "there ya go and your room is kinda down in the middle over there". Not, "we have a complimentary breakfast in the morning or feel free to use the bikes, or the ice machine is located..." Guy who checked me out didn't even make eye contact, started typing on computer. I finally asked "is that all you need". Oh, wait, I needed to sign something...customer service goes a long way in my book and it seems to be a lost art. "Jersey" the dog, however, was very friendly!! Was fine for a one night stay.

Room Tip: Stayed here on a Saturday night and the hotel was very full but the room was actually very quiet.

My husband and I rented a small room here on a VERY busy weekend. The couple (I think they own the place) that checked us in were very nice. The price was right too! The only wierd thing was that they didn't supply a clock in our room so we could set an alarm. Never had a room without an alarm clock. The other thing is that when we checked in it smelled so strong like cigarette smoke they even had the window open when we arrived, which let in the smell of the paper factory up the street. YUCK! The room was the smallest room I have ever stayed in, but it was ok to lay our head down. I believe we were staying in one of the original rooms, and again it was ok. They have complimentary zoo passes which is a plus and bikes you can use for free. Right on popular trails and so forth. Perhaps if we stayed here again, we would ask for a bigger, nicer room that didn't smell of smoke. Oh, breakfast was a nice serve yourself deal. Good choices with a small eating area.

The Munger Inn Duluth is my favorite place to say in the world. Okay, the Hilton Daytona Beach does have certain advantages, but for a down-home North Country feel, very clean and comfortable rooms, beautiful Up North surroundings, free waffles that you make yourself, and a super-friendly owner and staff, the Munger Inn is numero uno for your Duluth visit. They have a variety of room types from small basics, to big whirlpool suites, kitchenettes, living rooms, decks, and the list goes on. Plenty of gleaming wood everywhere you look. Their location has ski hills to one side, and biking trails to the other. And where else is a bike rental free? I visit ever year to get away from it all. Doesn't that sound nice?

Room Tip: Suites overlooking the courtyard are very nice. Otherwise, even their basic small room is perfectly...

What a wonderful place to stay! It is not the cheapest place, but well worth the few extra dollars! The place has been family-owned for decades and is in a great location with access to the ski hill and tons of walking trails!! Just far enough from downtown Duluth to avoid parking problems and noise, but close enough if you wanted food delivered it's not a problem!
My room, a jacuzzi suite, was clean, comfortable and well-stocked with plenty of towels, a fridge, microwave, flat screen TV, and free wi-fi. Continental breakfast has waffles, french toast, cereals, juices, plenty of hot coffee, and free newspapers all nicely laid out in a window-filled, wood-heated room, and the walls covered with the incredible history of Willard Munger, Sr.
I will be back during the summer weather to take advantage of the free walking trails, bicycles, firepits, and canoes available to guests.

My family, friends, and I have stayed at the Munger Inn a number of times. It is reasonably priced, offers unique extra's and is owned by a family with a long history of dedication to the environment and bicycling.

Willard Sr. was a long time Minnesota State Legislator and the driving force behind the creation of the Munger Trail: a 74 mile paved trail that goes from West Duluth to Hinkley, Minnesota. It is a gem and not to be missed...

The Inn is at the start of the trail and offers among other things free use of bicycles, a BBQ area, free Zoo passes, and lots of good practical advise. Please do make it a point to talk with Will Jr. about the trail and outdoor activities.

Looking forward to my next stay and bicycling the Munger Trail.

Room Tip: I like the large fireplace suite on the East end of the Inn.

For your money, location and accommodations, Willard Munger Inn is your best bet. Rooms are modern, clean and well maintained. The price is right, too. Continental breakfast includes waffles and french toast. Wifi and cable tv and free newspaper everyday. Across from Lake Superio zoo with complimentary tickets, across from Spirit Mountain Skiing, and great hiking on the Munger Trails. Free bikes and canoes are a bonus. And great fishing on the St Louis River. I have stayed here in the spring, summer, fall and winter months. It has always been the best experience. But, the nicest thing is the owners. The Mungers. They and their staff are great people. I will continue to go back.
