Bottom line – would I stay here again… yes. My wife had event in the Duluth area and we needed a motel room for 3 nights. There was so much going on in the area that rooms were hard to come by, and if you found one it was more than a little pricey.
Would I have stayed at a Cape Superior Inn if I just drove by it, probably not. It looks a little long in the tooth, not to say out dated.
However, this is good basic lodging. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the staff was helpful and friendly. What is spectacular is the view from the front porch. Or you can walk across the two lane road and there you are at Lake Superior. Duluth is just minutes to the south, and this is the scenic route north. Two Harbors is just up the way as are two very nice state parks, Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. There is a very nice restaurant next door, and if you want to drive to Duluth or a little north there is quite a selection of eatries. The location of the motel is great.
It is a bit of throwback though. There is no cable, but there is Wifi. There is no phone in the rooms, but with cell phones who cares. If you are a big man like me you will find the shower small. Soap was provided, but not shampoo, etc. The balcony and stairs were showing their age and could have used some maintenance. The same goes for the shower, but it was clean.
I do have two complaints. The water from the tap was undrinkable to us due to the taste. It tasted like sulfur well water. The water at the restaurant next door did not have this issue. Also they did not clean the toilet bowl each day which I found a little unappealing.
As I said if I were in the area again, I would give them another visit.
