“Excellent Hotel. Great History Lesson.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

We've stayed at Fitger's several times. Each time, we're impressed with the service and the property itself. The hotel was developed in the building that originally housed Fitger's Brewery, and a great deal of attention was paid to maintaining the historically significant parts of the building. Rooms are clean, quiet, and very comfortable. Sleep is never an issue - the beds are very comfortable. The property also houses a restaurant, a brewery, a brew pub, and a host of shops. We've stayed in several different rooms and suites. All are fantastic.

Room Tip: Views of Lake Superior are awesome, but don't panic if they only have city-side rooms - ALL of t...

We stayed last December and took the train to Bentleyville with our two young daughters. We stayed in a suite and had a lake view with a balcony. We loved it! The staff was warm and very accommodating. The doorman took us on a tour of the hotel and some of the rooms. The manager gave our girls each a little gift, which made this magical adventure even more memorable. The room was clean and comfortable for our short stay. We will absolutely return again!

Room Tip: We stayed in a suite with a whirlpool tub and a beautiful lake view. I would recommend this room for...

Had stayed for 3 nights. The building is massive, old and composed. I would like to visit agin if I have a chance in the future.

I knew I had made the right choice when the receptionist described their pet policy. She said, "We ask that you not leave your dog in the room alone." I said (kiddingly), "We have a horse."

Without missing a beat, she said, "We ask that you not leave your horse in the room alone.

We travel a great deal with our dog. Fitger's treats customers with dogs the right way. They have reserved four rooms for pets. And there is no extra charge for a pet. NO EXTRA CHARGE!

And we did not see or hear another dog, or another person,, the entire day and evening.

We had Room 215, a great room (the ceilings had to be 14 feet high) with easy outside access to the parking lot and to the lake shore walkway. This could not have been better for us or for our dog.

But that's not all. Fitger's does all the little things right. No username or password or rules to read for wifi access; simply turn on your device and go. The rooms are accessed by actual keys, not those plastic credit cardy things.

And, get this. They offer a "Pillow Menu" with a description of four types you may experience.

Combined with a jaunt up to the New Scenic Cafe up the North Shore and you have the makings of an exceptionally fine overnight

My husband and I drove to Duluth for a wedding this past weekend. Having never been to Duluth I wasn't sure what to expect. We decided to stay at the Fitgers, which turned out to be an EXCELLENT decision! Although the room rates seemed higher than what I expected for Duluth (all the hotels in the areas were well over $200 per night), we decided book a king room with a lake view. Our room was awesome! We were on the 4th floor overlooking the lake. The view was phenomenal! The room was very large which was a pleasant surprise. The shower was excellent and the quality of the bedding and towels was excellent. What impressed me the most was the high level customer service we received from everyone there! The staff is very well trained...quite impressive. Also the food and coffee was excellent! I am very tough critic and I was very pleasantly surprised! I highly recommend this hotel if you are planning to stay in Duluth.

We had booked a king room with a lake view for a night in Oct. of 2013. The carpet was filthy, lamp next to bed did not work, armchair was coming apart, tub safety strips were loose, tub drained very slowly, bed was soft & saggy & the windows through which there should have been a gorgeous view of the lake & ships was quite dirty. Upon checking out the following morning I spoke with the manager as I handed him this list of items needing attention. He was in complete agreement, much to my surprise, & did not charge us for the room. He said that the entire hotel was due to be remodeled & that within a year would be brought back to the standards that the traveler has grown to expect of Fitger's. While this was wonderful, it still does not explain why normal cleanliness should be forsaken when the traveler is paying extremely good money to stay in this historic hotel. So....wait until Oct. of 2014, if you can, to check it out.

Room Tip: wait until Oct. of 2014 to see if the remodeling is completed before visiting.

My husband and I recently traveled to Duluth for a wedding. After reading all of the TripAdvisor reviews, plus others, we opted to stay at Fitger's, despite the higher than average price. It was a good decision. The location is perfect - great views of the harbor from the room, and easy access to Duluth's wonderful lakeside boardwalk. We had a corner king standard room. The website is not kidding when it describes the room as small - this was a REALLY small room, although maybe it was smaller than usual because it was a corner. The bed took up most of the floor space. (good thing we love each other) Anyway, the three windows looking over the lake more than made up for it. Also, the shower was great. My husband is always disappointed with water pressure, height of the shower head, etc. in hotels; he proclaimed this the best hotel shower ever. The bed was firm and really comfy. The decor was simple, nice, and traditional. We did have several cobwebs over the bed and on the windowsill (minor enough we did not bother mentioning to the front desk, but housekeeping missed them three days in a row) but otherwise the room and bathroom were spotless. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. A doorman even refilled our cooler while we were loading the car to leave. There is valet parking, but the underground lot is convenient and free. Having the stores and restaurant in the same complex was nice. Midi's Restaurant had a great breakfast, including great coffee. (salmon hash with poached eggs ...) Overall, a definite recommendation.
