“The Only Place to Stay in Duluth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2003

Fitger's is the only place I stay when traveling to Duluth on business.
The beds and linens are extraordinary. The views (if you request a lakefront room) are fabulous of Lake Superior, and even the room service is far above average.

All of the rooms are beautifully furnished and contain cordless phones and CD players. Instead of a card key, the rooms actually use real metal keys - a charming throwback. Did I mention the price is totally reasonable? You can also enjoy dinner at Bennet's downstairs. While not the finest cuisine, it is still good and the views of passing ships make it that much more special. Bennet's also serves outstanding breakfasts.

In short, stay at Fitger's - - you won't be disappointed.

Overall, Fitger's is a nice hotel. The lobby, hallways, and rooms are aesthetically pleasing. The beds are comfortable and the sheets do not feel like sandpaper. That's what is great about Fitger's. What is not so great about Fitger's is the paper thin walls and the young and inexperienced staff. I believe an attentive and eager to please hotel staff is what sets a good quality hotel apart from a poor quality one.
I encountered an apathetic hotel staff on two occasions during my stay.

Bennett's and the Brewhouse are nice places to visit within the hotel.
However, the Tap-room (and that entire end of the hotel) reek of stale smoke and mold.

We first stayed at Fitger's when interviewing for a job in the area.
Since then we have stayed there multiple times and have always had a marvelous experience. The staff is courteous and helpful, the rooms are clean, comfortable, and full of charm, the lakefront is tremendous, and the attached mall and restaurants make it interesting and convenient.
We have traveled worldwide, and Fitger's is definitely on our top-five all time great hotels list. Make a reservation today!

This is a gem of a hotel - all of the conveniences (and, indeed, luxuries) you would expect from a 'branded' hotel, yet feeling unique and in-key with the place. The lake-front views are superb (especially early morning and late evening), and it's lovely to be able to step right out of the hotel and on to the lake-walk. It managed the rare feat of being elegant yet laid-back. An added bonus is the superb range of beers at the Brewhouse - and you can then stumble straight back to your room!

Fitger's Inn is a beautifully remodeled old brewery building. The first thing we loved was the high class service. A Doorman, a bellman, room service. Most hotels in Duluth do not have all of these!
Having restaurants and shops in the adjoining minimall was great too. We were able to visit a lovely wine store and book store as well as this really beautiful shop (Catherine's Imports?). My favorite was the coffee shop with the view of the lake.
The people at the front desk are extremely accomodating. We even received a tour! There is also a museum in the mall in case you're curious about the building and there's a microbrewery as well.
This hotel can be a bit pricier than some of the others in Duluth, but you also get a much higher level of service. The only person I wouldn't recommend it to, however, is someone with young children only because there is no pool.
I asked about this and was informed that the amount of remodeling required to accomodate a pool would have harmed the integrity of the building and taken away some of it's historic charm. They tried to keep the building as much intact as possible while still providing all of the modern luxuries, no easy task! Beautifully done, though. It has an almost European elegance.
