Pretty neat sight to see & touch if you want. Bummed we didnt get to see it go up :(

You can walk across it, drive across it, and stand right next to it while huge ships pass through it.
Arguably the most famous human-made sight in Minnesota (I'd hate to think that the Mall of America would be more famous, but ugh, it probably is), the "Lift Bridge", as it known by the locals, should be at the top of your must-see list when visiting Duluth. If you're there at when the boats (not ships; boats) are coming and going, stand under the bridge when it goes up to let in a 1000' ore boat; you won't believe how eerily quiet it is as it rises. You and your kids will remember this sight forever.
It isn't always easy to know when a ship is coming in. Check with the shops near the bridge to see when the next ship is scheduled to come in.
Very cool to be there as a large ship goes through the canal and under the bridge. The museum is full of interesting exhibits and displays a schedule of the ships going through. It is incredible how quietly the bridge goes up (except for a warning bell) and how quietly a 1,000 foot, fully loaded ship is. That is until the ship sounds its horn and the bridge replies -- that gets your attention!
