“Not near Santo Antão's great hiking trails, but very comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2009

I'm told that the Santantão Art Resort is owned by an Italian entrepreneur. He took quite a chance locating a European-standard hotel on this remote island. I recommend it in all respects. My room was comfortable, quiet, and well-equipped, with good air-conditioning and all the amenities you'd find in a midrange North American or European hotel, including lighting strong enough to read by. The restaurant is excellent, as is the included breakfast. Internet access is available in the lobby for a charge. The hotel staff will meet you at the ferry dock and bring you to the hotel without charge. If you're going to Santo Antão to hike, it's OK. The hotel is in Porto Novo, on the other side of the island from the classic hikes, but it's easy to jump into an aluguer (a collective transport vehicle, usually a van or pickup truck with benches) or hire a taxi to get to trailheads, and it shouldn't take more than an hour more than it would if you were staying in Ponta do Sol, Ribeira Grande, or Paúl.

Could not fault this hotel apart from when we stayed during its opening there were a couple of teething problems with the plumbing. The breakfast had a great selection when we were there - could not have been better so I do hope the previous reviewer had a one off experience saying selection was not so good. rFood in restaurant was also very good. The island is beautiful . Were not many tourists there when we visited .

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2008

opened March 08, still very quiet which suited us. Beautiful hotel, big spacious rooms, big beds, all very comfortable. Lots of areas inside and out to sit, quiet, very reasonably priced restaurant and excellent service and food, really good. Staff very helpful, interesting artwork throughout the place makes it just a little bit different, earns it's 4 stars. Only criticism is the breakfast buffet but as the hotel was less than 25 % full they couldn't be expected to provide a lavish display. All the food we had at lunch and dinner was v. good and very professionally served, fantastic fish especially the tuna carpaccio. Lovely staff, v. well trained. Thank-you!

  • Liked — generous space, lovey and unusual artworkl
  • Disliked — leaving it
