I'm told that the Santantão Art Resort is owned by an Italian entrepreneur. He took quite a chance locating a European-standard hotel on this remote island. I recommend it in all respects. My room was comfortable, quiet, and well-equipped, with good air-conditioning and all the amenities you'd find in a midrange North American or European hotel, including lighting strong enough to read by. The restaurant is excellent, as is the included breakfast. Internet access is available in the lobby for a charge. The hotel staff will meet you at the ferry dock and bring you to the hotel without charge. If you're going to Santo Antão to hike, it's OK. The hotel is in Porto Novo, on the other side of the island from the classic hikes, but it's easy to jump into an aluguer (a collective transport vehicle, usually a van or pickup truck with benches) or hire a taxi to get to trailheads, and it shouldn't take more than an hour more than it would if you were staying in Ponta do Sol, Ribeira Grande, or Paúl.
