Let me begin by saying that I've travelled extensively for business and pleasure and have stayed in everything from bare bones hostels to five-star hotels in big cities.
The good: The main campus of Ruttger's offers a beautiful wooded setting by Bay Lake. The outdoor pool overlooks the lake and it's wonderful to spend the afternoon there. Canoes and pedal boats are available for no extra charge. The staff are extremely professional and friendly. There are many buildings on the main campus that appear newer and have a "up north" log design.
The not-so-good: Our room was at Battle Point Condos, which is a mile away from the main campus of Ruttger's. It feels more like a motel/Howard Johnson's than part of the resort and the layout/design seems more Suburban USA than Up North Minnesota. Our room smelled very damp. The bed had a 1980s comforter and the mattress was very hard. Wallpaper was pealing in the bathroom. For $205/night (the price we paid for a 1 bedroom), one would expect better finishes, more comfortable bedding, and an overall clean feeling. If these condos were on the main property and easily accessible to the beach, I might concede the price a bit but since they aren't, it feels very overpriced.
