“Thanksgiving Dinner and Show”

This is an excellent place to enjoy dinner, drinks and a show. If we are in town, we always go here for Thanksgiving dinner and a show.

“Show was 5 star, Dinner was OK”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2012

We saw Hairspray at the Chanhassen on a date. I had heard that this venue had wonderful musicals so when we had an opportunity in April 2012, we got tickets. The musical was top rate with incredible voices and sound quality (technical). The choreography was crisp and very well done, too. I love musicals and go to the traveling Broadway shows in Des Moines quite often. The quality of this musical was at least as good and in some instances better than the Broadway series shows I've seen at the Des Moines Civic Center.
The service was very good; the food is ok. I don't think you should come for the food; come for the show. I was pleased that it is table service rather than a buffett (like some other dinner theaters that I've attended). The menu is limited but has a nice variety. Dessert is an extra charge (no problem) and I highly recommend the Limocella with Marscapone cake to share with your partner. It was light and refreshing and served at intermission when you settle up your bill for any additional charges (drinks, appetizers and desserts).
I liked the venue but you have to be OK with meeting new people or else fill up your own table. Our stage view was right on and it looks like almost all tables have good views.

So glad you enjoyed HAIRSPRAY when you were here in January. You might be surprised that Minnesota’s largest privately owned restaurant can serve over 1,000 restaurant patrons within a two-hour period. We are excited to announce that we have a new executive chef on staff who has revamped our menu. Our new chef David Kirchner comes to Chanhassen with fresh ideas and new energy. Give us another try this summer with XANADU, you will be pleasantly surprised!

“Needs updating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2012

Hubby and I were gifted a dinner and show here a few years ago and were saddened by the condition of the theater. We were expecting an upscale dining experience and show, but instead it was held in a wooden paneled theater (needing updating, badly!). The show and dinner were okay, but the atmosphere totally ruined it for us!

Chanhassen Dinner Theatres is the nation’s largest professional dinner theatre company and has been in business since 1968 – for nearly 45 years. We are an Equity status dinner theatre, one of about six left in the United States today. This puts Chanhassen in an unusual class as a dinner theatre with its acting company belonging to Actors’ Equity Association, the same union that Broadway actors must belong to. The building itself is practically on the historical register and was originally called, “The Frontier.” It might be interesting for you to know that the cedar plank and slate flooring used throughout our 90,000 square foot building was designed to feel rustic in nature. Patrons have come to enjoy the theatre for its very charming, warm ambience. - Solveig Theis, General Manager
