“We try to make it an annual tradition!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2011

If you are looking for a wonderful place to x-country ski in the wintertime, this is the place to come to! There is often snow at Maplelag when there is very little anywhere else--it is like driving into a winter wonderland! They do a wonderful job keeping the trails expertly groomed. There is a good mix of trails from beginner to more advanced. If you don't ski and just to relax, there are endless places in the lodge to sit and read, knit or work a puzzle. Next, the food... it's awesome! Most meals are served family style... it is not your typical institutional food.. everything is made from scratch. Maplelag is quite the unique place.. the owners have decorated the lodge with treasures they have collected from all over the world. The accomodations are unique also... no too are the same. If you are not into the dormitory rooms, you can choose one of the cabooses or one of the smaller cabins. Kids love Maplelag-- with the sledding hill, the ice rink, ping pong, games and puzzles in the lodge, there is always something to do. I will say, however, that Maplelag is rustic... if that is not your thing you may not be happy here. Likewise, if the sounds of happy children running around in the lodge bothers you, you may not be happy here either. We always look forward to our weekend at Maplelag!

Words can not begin to describe the magic of Maplelag. Whether you are a XC skier or not one visit and you will be forever part of the family. The setting is family friendly. The cabins are unique and the trails are perfect for beginner to competitive. What began as a 2 person get away in the late 1980's has become a 30 women weekend annual trip. My only regret is that I don't get there often enough.

Worst stay of my life. We had to stay at the Loon for a co-workers wedding. We were supposed to be at the Brant but we were randomly switched to the worst cabin on the "resort". All the money for the resort was clearly spent on the main lodge. There was rat poison, rat traps, holes in the floor, water leaking in the bedroom, the ladders were not secure, and there were scews just lying around. The cabin was so cold that we had to sleep in our jeans and sweaters. I had the heat turned up to the max of 80 degrees and it still felt like 65 in there, maybe it was because two of the heaters didn't work from getting water dripped on them! The bed was simply a foam pad which was the most uncomfortable thing of all time. The bed is not long enough for anybody that is taller than 5'5". The old man at the front desk was very rude and can't hear anything that you are saying anyways. We lost $100 to not stay the second night and it was WORTH EVERY PENNY!

I've stayed at MapleLag Resort several times - initially because of work-related conferences. Because I loved it so much I took my family and ultimately coordinated a gathering of 30+ people here. It's located in Minnesota's great Northwoods, just north of the prairies. The cross-country skiing is amazing! It's great for families because you stay in a dorm-type lodge but the big lodge is open all the time - your kids are free to roam and get midnight fresh-baked cookies and milk. The big lodge begs exploration - from the largest Scandinavian hot tub in Minnesota to the libraries, towers, nooks & crannies, as well as numerous couches & fireplaces throughout. There's always a place to cuddle up for hot chocolate, a book, one of the hundreds of games on their shelves, or a simple conversation. There are wonderful trails to ski and hike. There are loons on the lake that wail at night.

We love the border collies that greet you upon arrival.

The only time I'd probably not stay there is during one of the summer loppets. Surprising even to the owners, the loppets have become super popular and you just don't get that unique, woodsy, private feel like you do the rest of the year.

Plan on staying in simple yet warm and adequate accommodations, having family-style meals with everyone staying there, finding lots of unique and wonderful mysteries and magic everywhere you go, and probably learning a lot about cross-country skiing, the northern borealis (northern lights), and Minnesota great northwoods during your stay.

LOVE IT!

Thanks for the wonderful feedback. Yes, the mountain bike race weekend is a very busy time and best to check with us to see if it is a good time to visit Maplelag. We hope to see the northern lights in the future, it has been a few years!

We visit Maplelag often, usually once in the summer and once in the winter. It's an amazing resort with breath taking scenery and wonderful trails for exploring. It's our families favorite vacation spot.

We have stayed at Maplelag over the New Years holiday for six years. It is family run, and the staff is wonderful. This is a four season resort, but they are best known for their cross country skiing, with over 63k of trails (classic and skate, with excellent grooming). Many of the same people return each year at the same time, making it easy to get to know one another. Meals are served family style, with different menus each day, but with everyone served the same foods for that day. They also serve vegetarian meals if you tell them in advance.

Accommodations range from hostell to private rooms, with you furnishing your own sheets, towels, ect.

I know it sounds as if I was prompted to write this, but I was not. It is just a great place and you really feel at home while you are there.
