“Fantastic place for a wedding.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

Just had a fantastic weekend at shrigley hall. I got married there on Sunday but stayed on the Saturday evening too. All the staff were very attentive they all went above & beyond their duties to help me. Location is absolutely amazing.

Stayed for 1 night DBB with Chatsworth house tickets included. Hotel and spa could do with some renovations, rooms are small with marks on furniture and in bathroom. No plug in bathroom sink.
We enjoyed an hour in the spa, however the jacuzzi was full of grit and dirt and was so full of chlorine it made your eyes sting.
After our visit to the spa we thought we would enjoy a nice relaxing afternoon tea in the bar, however it was full of loud, drunk wedding guests and was therefore not peaceful in the slightest. We took our cups of tea to reception and asked if they had a quiet lounge where we could sit and they directed us to a small seating area next to the restaurant. The staff were very helpful and pleasant throughout our stay and we could not fault their service.
The best bit about the hotel was the food which was cooked and presented beautifully, it is a shame about the rest of the hotel. I would not recommend going on a weekend in the summer unless you like a lot of noise from wedding guests, rowdy bars and been woken up throughout the night by drunk people returning to their rooms! Certainly not a relaxing country house break! We would not return.

Whilst the main hotel was very grand the rooms at the rear of the hotel are not worthy of 2 star. We stayed in a 'family room' in which you couldn't move. No air con just a fan which on a hot night just moved hot air about. The windows didn't open further than an inch. The temperature was just unbearable especially for two young children who could not sleep and became irritable. When we complained after the first night it was just met with a shrug. Breakfast was a disaster, no highchairs available, waiting for food, child hating guests. We booked for the pool, but our children were asked to be quiet as they were disturbing guests having treatments. Children having fun aren't mute! Either make it an adults only hotel or lighten up. All in all, glad we only paid half price or would be demanding money back. On the plus side it was set in a lovely grounds. We had a day at Chester and a day in the Peak District which made up for our grumbles.

Hotel exterior plain, which belies the beautiful interior. The surrounding grounds are jaw dropping - such beauty everywhere! Our room was quite small but ok - glad weather was not hot - fan provided but no air con. The bed was overdue for a replacement - quite hard plus the springs could be felt. Bathroom recently refurbed, I think, as it was a different era from the old fashioned bedroom. BUT- the good news is the superb, truly fine dining!!! What a pleasure to enjoy such a high standard of beautifully cooked and presented evening meal....... Our breakfasts were of a high standard too. All enhanced by very special, attentive (but not over the top servility) service. The restaurant managers were completely professional and on the ball and the waiting staff were great - especially Agnese and Jessica. Only jarring note was a frosty, curt member of staff in reception, when we checked in for our 4 nights stay. She was soon forgotten as the rest of the staff made up for her! My partner is a golfer but due to very wet weather, didn't play but thought the course looked excellent.

Room Tip: If possible, get a room in the main building, to avoid being in a wing at the back, as no lift acces...

Stayed here for two nights and left feeling distinctly underwhelmed. We were allocated rooms at the back of the hotel that accessed via steep stairs, with no alternative lift access. The rooms themselves were adequate but the lack of air conditioning may have been a problem during warmer weather. The hotel was quite grubby and our room had obviously not been dusted properly for a long time. We only used the restaurant once during our stay and I wish we hadn't. We were staying with small children yet were not able to book a table before 7:30. We had to wait an excessively long time for our meals and when they did come they were either cold or burnt or inedible. In all fairness we did complain and the meal was taken off the bill. We had to ask three times to get extra pillows and there was so much chlorine in the pool that our eyes were stinging. There were five of us in the party and this seemed to confuse the breakfast attendant each time we asked for a table for five. All in all a very poor effort and very disappointing. We think the performance was not worthy of 4*, the staff need some effective training and the whole hotel could do with a tidy up.

Room Tip: try and ask for a room on the ground floor near the front, unless you like long walks up steep stair...

Having stayed at this hotel 3 times, I felt it appropriate to comment upon the hotel. The hotel has exceeded expectations on all occasions and has been excellent. The staff are efficient and friendly and the check in/check out service is quick and painless. Staff are always polite and courteous. The breakfast provided is excellent and the spa facilities including the treatments offered are brilliant. Unable to fault this hotel at all.

We booked this hotel initially because it included free entry into Chatsworth House we didn't expect much. Wow! Were we suprised? The building itself was lovely and grand, the staff were friendly and helpful. The views were out of this world. The swimming pool was a little on the small size but clean and good. The food was excellent and the waiting staff engaging. Delighted with this hotel.
