We stayed here for four nights just after the fourth of July holiday. My brother-in-law negotiated a rate of $99 a night, and when the reunion was over we all agreed that this Marriott turned out to be a great choice for our little group. It wasn't luxurious or formal, but it was certainly comfortable for several families with children; plus the great staff made up for any quirks.
Our room was spacious, with a couch (sofabed?), desk, chair, coffeepot, ironing board/iron, and hair dryer (no fridge, alas). But the best part was the king-sized BED. It was very plush, with down pillows and a light down cover, and it conformed nicely to the back, so great when you've been sitting on a plane for hours... after sleeping on it for four nights, my husband and I decided we'd found the replacement for our old mattress at home, and I shoved the Marriott catalog into my suitcase to take home. The room did have some quirks, though- the ceiling had this wacky waffle pattern (see picture), and although the floor-to-ceiling glass door had a nice view of the large courtyard, it couldn't be opened more than an inch. It almost seemed as if the room had been designed to have a balcony, but there wasn't one, so the door must be kept shut. Strange, but the room was still very comfortable (and did I mention the BED?)
The lobby area is pleasant, leading into a long hallway with many places for groups to sit and converse, ending at the restaurant and then the bar. (The staff at the bar was particularly friendly and accommodating, and by the third day they started dragging tables together as soon as our group walked in). There are four floors of rooms above the lobby floor, and yes the word 'maze' does come to mind- hang on to your map. Past the bar is a very pleasant indoor pool and whirlpool area, and beyond that there are two courtyards with lots of seating. There is surprisingly little noise from the airport nearby. The Mall of America is just across the street from the hotel, but it's a very wide, busy street followed by Ikea and then a large dirt parking lot, so consider driving or taking the shuttle. The small business center (3 computers) has a computer set up just for airline check-in- very handy.
With the pool and seating areas, we all enjoyed hanging out here for a few days. One of the staff also recommended this great Italian restaurant called Ciao Bella, a few miles from the hotel (pasta, grilled meats, fish, salads). Definitely worth going if you have a car. The hotel has easy access to a major highway, 494, via 24th avenue.
