“Disappointing for Hyatt branded hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2009

Booked this hotel based on previous experience with Hyatt hotels and reviews I read. Definitely surprised at how disappointing this place was. The room was ok, though the bathroom area is very small. The breakfast area downstairs is a complete disaster! The first morning, dirty dishes were stacked everywhere and tables were filthy. They were out of everything before 8:45 and the girl working the area was no help at all. The next morning we headed down for breakfast and gave up after standing in line for 5 minutes. The IHop next to the Mall of America is your best bet. Another evening, we tried to order dinner to take up to our room. Unfortunately the girl from our earlier breakfast was working and the experience ended with the same results. She took forever, they were out of items we ordered and she had no clue how to refund our money. The hotel is also VERY noisy! We had a family down the hall with small children and we could hear them screaming and banging four rooms aways. Would not stay here again.

I would stay at this hotel again because of the room quality. The room was spacious, bed was very comfortable, extra large "L" shaped sofa was very cozy. The TV was thoughtfully placed in the room so you could watch in bed or snuggle on the couch & watch some tv. The free internet business center was helpful. The bar was kinda tacky & seemed out of place in the lobby. The breakfast was minimal...more for the on-the-go business traveler. Overall, a decent place.

If you have ever stayed at a Hyatt Place, this one is much like all the others with the check in and Gallery area. It is about one year into its renovation and it is holding up very well.
If you've never stayed at a Hyatt Place, you have to be ready for a bit of a different experience.
It starts with the check-in. You can automatically check into your room using one of the two high speed kiosks right inside the front door. With a swipe of the card, you can get a receipt and your room keys within about 30 seconds and be on your way to your room. (Many people who haven't been at a Hyatt Place walk in sometimes a bit confused because there is not a traditional front desk....its a small front desk next to the Gallery, which is the restaurant for the hotel). But you can bypass front desk lines and all the time wasted checking in by just doing the kiosk yourself and you can be on your way to your room less than one minute after walking in the door.
The next major difference is the "Gallery". Yes the Hyatt Places don't have a typical restaurant. Right inside the door is the Gallery where there's small bar for wines and beer, a what they called "Grab and Go" case with sandwiches, salads, drinks, etc. all which you can just grab, have the Gallery Host ring up and scan your room key and be on your way, either to your room or to any of the many nooks and crannies that they've set up with eating spaces.
For any meal until abotu 10 pm each night, they have a Gallery area where you can order off a touch screen any of their menu items, scan your card yourself and they will cook and deliver it to your table. Or, you can take it up to the room with you, if you want.
I've read some of the reviews here that have dissed the food, but I have to tell you, they have more on their menu than many in-hotel restaurants I've been to that are much fancier. The food is suprisingly good. And, I really liked the high-tech ordering kiosks.
After 10 pm they have more of an appetizer menu available, plus anything from the 'grab and go case' so they have lots of eating options for pretty much any time of day. They do NOT have traditional room service. You can view the menu from your room's hugh HDTV and can call down to order food, but they don't bring it to your room. But the Gallery area is so cool, I'd want to eat there anyway...why eat in the room?
The breakfast is as good as any of the free breakfast buffets I've been at (except maybe for the ones at Embassy Suites). This is continental breakfasts but you can still order more hot food from the kiosks if you want.
The pool is larger than most hotel pools. There is no hot tub, but the room is very warm so it is comfortable to stand outside the pool and not feel too cool. The water temperature is a litlte on the warm side which is great. They have an adult only swim each night from 10 pm to midnight which is nice to clear the kids out.
The rooms themselves are really what makes this hotel a great value. They are all suites, so they have extra room to spread out.
Each room comes with a huge living room area with a sectional that folds out to a sleeper sofa and big overstuffed ottoman.
The beds are somewhat firm but plush and comfortable. (I like softer beds and this was a tad firmer than what I like but it was still very high quality). The sink and dressing area is outside the bathroom which only contains the toilet and shower. The sink and vanity are very nice and the amenities are just what you'd expect from this kind of hotel.
The bathroom looks like it got new wall coverings but the toilet and sink were not part of the renovation. Despite this, my shower was very strong and worked well. The toilet even had something I've never seen in a hotel before. A lid that can't slam. It slowly allows the lid to close without slamming. Cool!
The TV is nothing short of amazing. It's a 42" flat screen LCD HDTV (Made by LG). They have about 45 channels with lots of options for PPV movies, PPV Sports Channels and lots of cable channels including HBO in Hi-Def. (A previous reviewer complained about only 30 basic channels....but I can tell you after watching NatGeo, Discovery and HBO all in High Def...I don't know what they were complaining about. There were plenty of channels. They don't have all the local channels. There was a local obscure channel showing a hockey game I wanted to see and they didn't have that one. But there are plenty of options. If you brought an iPod, portable DVD player or handheld game, there is a docking port that you can plug into and have the giant screen be your monitor.
So there are lots and lots of options.
The TV swivels so it can be seen either in bed or tilted toward the living room area.
The living room and bedroom are separated by a half wall with an opaque panel set in it that does the trick of making it look like two separate rooms with only one room.
There is a work area right next to the living area with a desk, lamp and plug ins for power for a laptop. There is FREE high speed WiFi in every room, plus a cool "E-Room" next to the Gallery with two computers and printers that you can use to print boarding passes from.
There is a wet bar with a nice sink and fridge. (There is no microwave). It's right next to the work area. There is free in room coffee with one of those single cup brewers. The coffee is okay, but you can go to the Gallery and get Starbucks 24 hours, if you want.
At check out, you can go to the kiosk and self-check out, scan your credit card, drop your keys and be on your way....again in under a minutes.
The location is directly across the street from the airport and just two blocks from the Mall of America. This is an airport hotel next to the highway, so you have to expect a bit of noise. But it is not directly under a glidepath like some of the hotels in Eagan or Bloomington, so its not as bad as it could be. If you are on the south side of the hotel, you wont' hear the road noise.
In short, this is a very nice hotel in its class and it comes at a mid level rate. If you try hard enough you can probably get a really cheap rate. This is well worth the effort.

  • Disliked — Slight Noise

A group of friends and I stayed at this hotel for one night in September and for the most part were pretty impressed. The staff was friendly, though not quite as competent as I would have expected with the Hyatt brand. The room was definitely oversized and the beds/pullout sofa sleeper were comfortable. The 42" plasma TV might be overkill, especially with the limited channels (no MTV, VH1, E!, - popular channels) available. The menu, though advertised as being available anytime, day or night, was not available after 10:00 PM. The pool room was warm, but the water was moderate and it was definitely in need of a cleaning. The shower in the room was clean, as was the rest of the room. The refrigerator was a huge plus as well. The air conditioning unit was constantly turning on and off all night, quite loudly, sometimes only being off for a couple seconds at a time, causing some sleep disruption, which we were expecting, being close to the airport - but it wasn't caused by airplanes at all!

  • Liked — Complimentary high-speed internet access, comfortable oversized rooms
  • Disliked — Lack of knowledageable staff, pool cleanliness, availability of TV channels and food at night

Its still a new concept, this Hyatt Place, but it really recalls for me an over-the-top motel 8 type of place with the minimal staff, lack of real food or safe in the room, and surface-only housekeeping - in other words its just a motel with nice furnishings and marble around the sink.

When I stayed here, there was some teenage beauty pagent and the hotel was booked, which might color my review a bit. Seems Hyatt uses the Gallery concept to reduce the number of staff on duty, which really makes for slow service as the two staff on duty Saturday night alternated between bringing out food (probably frozen pre-serve packages), pouring drinks, and checking in/helping out guests. If Hyatt Place only offered the standard in-room information books on local dinning options, channel guides, etc. they'd allow their Gallery staff to attend more to what they should instead of asking all sorts of questions from clueless guests.

Though saving on reception staff costs doesn't explain the low standards for housekeeping; there seemed to be a lack of attention to detail that is not expected in a Hyatt. The first time I took a shower, hairs floated up out of the drain - and there were still pencil marks on the wall from when the contractors were marking where to mount the towel rack.

For a hotel that is pushing "high-tech" marketing, its just a shame that the 42" televisions only got 30 or so channels, most of them basic cable. While this 42" tv was one of the main reasons I decided to give Hyatt Place a shot, it was a disappointment.

The rooms, though, seem pretty nice - well appointed although the layout is a bit odd and the bath really is no better than your typical no-tell motel. Not a bad experience, but no what I expected from Hyatt.

I got this hotel for about 1/2 price from booking it off of hotel.com. It was a great place!! The rooms were very well kept and come with a huge flat-screen tv, coffee maker, fridge, and other things as well. The beds were comfy and it was a quiet hotel. They offer free continental breakfast which was nice and also offer a 24/7 restaurant you can order from, although prices are quite high. (for example:scrambled eggs in the morning with apple bacon runs you a little over eight bucks). I would stay here again.

  • Liked — The great rooms.

We stayed at this location over Labor Day weekend. Ww decided a few before to book and made a decision quickly to get a room for this busy weekend. We were driving to Minnesota to attend the state faire, and go to Mall of America. This hotle is so contempory and hip looking. The staff was very welcoming, helpful and pleasant. The pool had a adult swim from 10:00 til midnight. This did not apply to us as we had a 12 yr daughter with...but I thought this was nice for those that just want to get in the pool and not swim around kids. The room was very well kept. Bathroom was very clean. Beds were extra comfy. The breakfast was fine for us. Cereal, bagels, toast, yogurt, and fresh fruits. There were hot cooked to order breakfast available for an extra charge. This was a different way of doingit..but like I said, it worked fine for us. If I have to make any complaint...it would be that we were so close to the airport at 6:00 am the airplanes taking off and landing woke us up. We figured out that if we had the fan running on the air conditioning unit this took care of this issue...

  • Liked — The clean atmosphere..huge flat screen tv!!
  • Disliked — the airport so close by..noise level
