“Bday celebration with a difference !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

We stayed in the Barr al Jissah resort for my wife's bday, needless to say it felt we were transformed into a different country altogether. The resort and its surroundings looked so different form the rest of oman with its white coloured mountains and luscious sandy beach. The property itself was huge that it took us half a day to explore it all. The pool and jacuzzi was exceptionally beautiful as it overlooked the sea ! Now that's pretty site and tough for any hotel to recreate ! The hotel live upto it's shangri la name !

I stayed at both Al Waha and Al Bandar hotel of Shangri La's Barr Al Jissah Resort. Al Waha is supposedly the cheapest of the three hotels in the complex. We stayed more than 2weeks each time at these hotels and I prefered Al Waha than Al Bandar mainly due to the fact that food is better at Al Waha (with more option). The hotel is located far from the city so we had to order all the time during our stay and hence we rank Al Waha above Al Bandar. However, one problem with Al Waha is that you won't get wifi in the room; have to go to the lobby for the wifi. Al Bandar being a more expensive hotel you get wifi at the room. Also I think the view from Al Waha is better than Al Bandar. There is a nice walkway by the beach which is lovely. Also Oman Diving centre is nearby where you can do outdoor activities.

This hotel certainly exceeded our expectations. Our children (5 & 9) absolutely loved the beach, pools & lazy river. The two inter-connecting rooms provided worked well, though they are fairly basic for a luxury hotel. Clean with decent bathrooms though.

The wide range of restaurants were good quality, with plenty of choice. I would take issue with the price gouging though - 90 pounds (140 US) for a buffet meal for two adults & two children (no wine or beer) is frankly a ripoff. Similarly 10 pounds for a couple of tiny spring rolls at the poolside cafe is not much of a bargain. If you can get an all-inclusive or half board deal, then I would recommend going for that. We have paid far less at other 5* hotels, but of course you have no option but to eat on site somewhere, so they know they've got you. On the plus side, the service was friendly & efficient and the food was generally excellent.

I would thoroughly recommend booking the dolphin watching trip from the dive centre. This lasts 90 minutes, and we saw hundreds & hundreds of dolphins swimming and jumping all round the boat. Apparently it is very unusual not to see these large groups, no matter what time of year you travel.

We also took the guided trip out to the desert to do 'dune bashing' in a 4x4. This is a long (8 hour) round trip, but you get to see so much of the country, as well as the desert itself. Do note that you will only go to the edge of the desert though - this is not a desert safari trip. This includes a trip to a wadi pool for swimming, which is good fun but was very crowded in the summer.

Last year we went to one of the top hotels in Mauritius, and our boys said that they had a better time in this hotel (which was far cheaper). We didn't use the kids club, but it does look as if it is really just for pre-schoolers, despite being billed for up to 12 year olds.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel to any family looking for a destination that is a bit different.

we had a wonderful holday at the Shangri la in Oman ,. we were with 02 small children so could stay at the Al Waha resort...very comfortable and the perfect view - the Superior room ...the view of the gulf of oman. The drive to the hotel from muscat city was awesome...evrything about the hotel was amazing , the service was very very courteous though a bit slow at the pool. The hotel was full during the days we were there ,and at breakfast time , it was a nightmare , but could see all smiling faces of the staff and chefs ....was amazing! the kids zone at the hotel was a good ways to spend the afternoon with kids , though below 04 yr olds have to be accompanied.the Al Bandar hotel has a good all day dining with good food. kids dont feel out of place since lots to do in terms of swimming..the lazy river was a treat for them. highly recommend this hotel for a family getwaway.

Room Tip: ask for a superior room -sea view -higher floor.

We went to Oman wanting great sun, peace and quiet. We got all this at this resort. This is a big resort with a beautiful beach. I loved this holiday and so did my hubby. great memories of natural beauty.

Great hotel and excellent location. We just came back from a short break with our 1 year old baby and this is the perfect place for a summer escape in the middle east.
The weather was fab and the temperature much cooler than UAE or Qatar.
Breakfast was amazing! We would love to come back again.

Very disappointing visit. On arrival told only single beds, according to manager we were not the only guests to have that problem but it was not the hotels fault but the booking agent's!!
Our room was basic and no where near 5 star standard. The room had a musty smell which housekeeping said was coming from the drains in the bathroom. Bed linen was washed out and torn and had to be replaced and the fridge was not working and was not stocked.

We went to the Sultanah restaurant in the Al Husn hotel. Food was not very exciting but the service was good.

The only saving grace for this hotel were the views which are beautiful. Would not recommend this hotel to friends.
