“Beautiful Golf Course and Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2010

My husband and I stayed here yesterday and it was a wonderful getaway. We both enjoyed playing golf and relaxing at the indoor pool. Rooms were nice and up to Marriott standards. I would recommend to anyone wanting to play golf or needing to stay in Ypsilanti.

We made reservations for this hotel through the University of Michigan's Alumni Association - booked the room 5 months in advance, secured with a credit card. We were not able to arrive until midnight, so called at 8 pm to let them know we would be a late arrival. We arrived at 11:30 after a 9 hour car trip, only to be told they were overbooked and did not have a room for us, but would put us up at a local Super 8.
In addition, they told us a person from the alumni association cancelled our reservation - which we did not know how that could happen since we had no communication with anyone, other than to make reservations, through the alumni association.
After much heated discussion with the desk clerk, we sucked it up and went to a different hotel - 20 miles away!!!
The next day we arrived back at the hotel for the Alumni association events and made inquiries about the "cancelled" reservation. They knew nothing of such communications and were not pleased that they were being blamed for such bad business practices.
In my profession, if we demonstrated such inconsiderate and poor business practices, we would lose our licenses to practice and ultimately be sued. How can this be prudent or even sound? I would like an explanation of why and how such decisions are made.

We stayed here two nights coming and going from our destination. We asked for adjoining rooms since we were with children. We were not even given rooms on the same floor, but the worst was the odor! There is an obvious mildew/mold/water damage problem. It's bad! When I complained I was told there were no other rooms and they could spray. Since I didn't want chemicals sprayed to cover and compound the problem there was nothing they could do. The manager offered no compensation and took down the room number. Anyway, I wrongly assumed this was just on the 4th floor, maybe just our room and requested a 5th floor adjoining room for the return trip instead of canceling the second night on our return trip. Alas, I wish I had canceled as the 5th floor reeks too. I can't believe this is a Marriott! The place looks good on first view and if you don't have a nose it's fabulous. The lobby/bar is classy, the rooms are good size and clean, but you can't just get rid of mildew by spraying a chemical cover up. As an aside, I have been a stockholder for years. I inherited the stock from my dad. This made me want to sell. PEE YEW!

We booked the room a few weeks ago prior to a family reunion on-line with the hotel website, and received a rate better than any of the similar Ann Arbor properties. We didn't know what to expect as the reviews were mixed.

The property is right off of 94, and is convenient to some small shopping malls and about 5 minutes from downtown Ypsilanti. It is located on the Eagle Crest golf course and over looks Ford Lake. Check in was a breeze, and we received some great news on check-in that we were in a room on the top floor overlooking the lake and golf course. And the view was phenomenal.

The Positives

Service was great, very responsive and even had my request for an extra pillow done when we arrived in our room.

Room was well appointed, nice flat screen TV, pleasant decor, desk nice chair.

Bed was great, down comforter and pillows (an option when we booked), very comfortable.

Nice bathroom, we like the sink outside the tub / toilet area. Great water pressure in the shower. Bath & Body soap / shampoo, etc. Sewing kit, Q-tips, cotton balls, all there.

Golf course next door was nice, played 9 holes was $32 including cart as a guest rate. $49 for 18.

Lounge bartenders were very friendly, and good choice of top shelf liquor.

Has a pool / spa but we didn't use - both looked to be clean and well maintained, just like the exercise room we didn't use... :)

Areas to Improve

The room doors allow a lot of light in, we had to shove towels around ours to keep the room dark.

Our air conditioner did not dehumidify well, but did keep the room at a comfortable temperature.

Bar / Restaurant were very expensive. Not many options around, either. We went to Buffalo Wild Wings across the street for supper. The egg sandwich was great, though!

Overall

I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at this Marriott for a few nights five years ago, and then again this month. It is very convenient to the highway and to Ann Arbor. It is a perfectly fine marriott. It is not a luxury hotel, but it has clean rooms (with really comfy beds) and a nice looking property and lobby. We ate brunch in the hotel restaurant and enjoyed that. They sort of force you into it. For just an omelette it is $12, so why not spend the extra dollar for the full brunch (which has an omelette station) and gets you coffee/juice included as well.
The worst part of the hotel is the view from our front facing room of the parking lot, and the bathrooms which you could find in almost any 2-star motel. They are clean, no frills hotel bathrooms.
The front desk was helpful and efficient with check-in and check-out.

Oh, and we appreciated the free wi-fi in the rooms!

This hotel sits on a golf course and is really quite lovely. 2 restaurants - one more casual, where I ate, and one downstairs that was supposed to be a little nicer - but still casual. The room on concierge level was clean, well appointed and in typical Marriott style - shower/tub combo, bath and body works products - comfortable bed. Room size was great - facing the course - lovely view. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Parking on site, right outside the front door practically, and free. Also - free wifi in the lobby. The problem I had here was that a conference was going on with the most obnoxious participants ever. Not that I am old fashioned or a prude-but I am traveling for work, and really wanted to eat a meal without having several women constantly screaming (yes, screaming) during my meal. Same scene in the concierge lounge - and no alcohol there to boot (unusual). It bothered me a little that the hotel staff did nothing to make the place enjoyable for all guests, not just the rowdy groups who took over everything. This should not deter anyone from staying there, though - its nice - the food in the restaurant was quite good and offered some very health conscious options for those who dont like heavy fattening meals - and very close to U of M - a 10 to 15 minute drive at the most.
