“A real Gem of a Hotel, Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2008

Such a wonderful hotel! My friend and I booked a Saturday night Dinner Bed and Breakfast summer rate of £235 per room.

Right from the start, we couldn't fault the hotel. On arrival we were upgraded to a superb twin room overlooking the river and terrace. The room was lovely. Very large, spacious and well decorated. Not dated at all like a previous review stated. The bathroom was exceptionally modern and had a large corner bath which was great. Thomas showed us to our room. An lovely man who guided us through to our room with details on the hotel, information and polite chit chat. The grounds of the hotel are superb. Well kept and pretty with trailing paths through the woodland.

We spent the afternoon on the terrace with champagne and a cream tea (both lovely) and finished with a wonderful meal in the Orangery. Starters of fois gras / crab salad and mains of lamb were lovely. Coffee back out on the terrace and a night cap. We couldn't have asked for more. Room service breakfast came bang on time, hot and exactly what we asked for.

All in all, we loved our stay here. Hotel and grounds are beautiful and the room was lovely. Food excellent and staff all very professional and kind. And for the price, we couldn't have been happier!

Post HR Regatta this was a good place to return to. Utterly charming building and very well kept grounds. Stunning new pool. Quite a mixed experience though. I liked the barman's professionalism, the door staff's politeness. However... This place has a difficulty with temperature, white wine warm, tea cold, bar too stuffy, Some drinks we ordered never appeared. Orangery restaurant was very dissapointing, the food was mediocre and the staff almost unprofessional. Interesting at 9am Sunday morning the hotel chooses to do noisy maintenance work. Overall this place needs a little polish to make it really shine.

  • Liked — The beautiful building
  • Disliked — Indifferent restaurant staff....

We have just come back from a Saturday/Sunday stay at the Danesfield. Some of the reviews had worried me before we arrived but those concerns disappeared as soon as we drove up the sweeping driveway. A concierge (Thomas) parked our car, and gave us a brief guided tour of the facilities en route to our (upgraded) room. We were given a family room which meant we actually had a split level 'suite' with a sitting room separate from the bed area. We were disappointed to find a rather grotty and not very clean mini bar containing one small bottle of water (someone came to clean it, without us asking).

The bed was large and comfortable and the shower was a real drencher.
The spa facilities were superb (pity some people cannot read and ignore signs about removing outdoor shoes before entering the pool area). Staff were continuously tidying, cleaning and ensuring that the ample supplies of towels, robes and slippers were maintained.

In the evening, we ate in the Oak room - this is a true gastronomic experience - especially the taster menu which extends to 11 separate dishes being placed in front of you. Neither one of us normally slelects a terrine from a menu; after the squab pigeon, foie gras, pear terrine last night, we may consider selecting one more often. The meal was slightly spoiled by a couple who complained continuously throughout the second half of their meal before finally refusing to pay the bill - the staff are to be commended for persevering, and trying to address the situation with what was obviously going to be little chance of success.

The staff in general are wonderful - high standards throughout.
It was an expensive night away but anything to get away from Eurovision night! Seriously it was an extremely relaxing stay in a beautiful hotel with superb cuisine.

  • Liked — The genuine welcome and the comiitment & focus on the guest
  • Disliked — The mini bar.

Stayed here on business during the hotest week of the year so far. To my horror no rooms at the hotel have air-con! Disaster! However the pool is magnificent, the grounds were beautiful and the staff were exceptional. The only other gripe was the room I had was dated and needs a refurb.

Stayed here for 2 nights recently due to a private function. Very disappointed with the poor standards. We paid £195 for the first night and £105 for the second due to special function price. Our room was comfortable but dated and in need of decorating.Portable TV no tea or coffee making facility and 1 small bottle of water in the mini bar.We asked for an iron and board, both were filthy. On the first night we ate as part of a group in the orangery( food was just ok) the room was very cold and we had to ask for some heaters to be placed by the table, 2 heaters 1 only just worked. Bar prices extortionate considering the standard of the surroundings.
On the plus side the setting is very nice and the organization of the function was excellent. Nice Spa area, although we didn`t indulge,we did use the pool and sauna.
On check out and after paying the bill I did comment on the poor standards, I was offered no explanation or apology.
All in all a 3 star hotel at 5 star prices.

I booked a Sunday spa deal through Spa Breaks, for £150pp which included a night's stay in a standard room, one hour treatment each (I took my boyfriend as a thanks for all his hard work on my house!), a 3-course dinner and breakfast for Monday morning.

The grounds are absolutely stunning, we went for a little walk both days we were there - stunning waterfalls and well kept grass, and a view of the Thames! We were very impressed with the room which had a balcony overlooking the Orangery restaurant and the Thames. The bed was massive too - room was lovely - only thing was a slight smell of cigarettes in the bathroom.

The spa is great, although I wouldn't like to be there on a busy day as there are only about 10 - 14 loungers. Jacuzzi was a fab experience and the sauna and steam room are top notch. There is also a female-only sauna / steam room and male one too but I went with my partner and we wanted to be together! We had a full body massage each, my boyfriend really enjoyed his but I found my room a little cold. Should have spoken up!! I did fall asleep for a few seconds though so it did the trick ;) The spa has an abundance of towels / robes and slippers for use which is great - and molton brown products in the showers. Fab. The gym is cool too - I used it on Monday morning and was the only one in there! Equipment is "Technogym" - not my favourite but then I went for the spa not the gym!

Dinner was fab - do try the foie gras starter - DELICIOUS! Drinks were not included in our deal, these were really expensive - £12.50 a cocktail and there was cognac on the menu for £130 for 35ml! hehe. We avoided that. A good bottle of sauvignon was £28.50 and the beers were under a fiver (just). Plus with the breakfast it was only included if you went for the buffet - my boyf went for the full English though and really enjoyed it.

I would defintely recommend Danesfield, it is easy enough to get to and the grounds are STUNNING! Not sure I would have gone for more than 1 - 2 nights though, but then I like to have a lot to do! As it was this was exactly what my boyfriend and I needed, it was wonderful.

  • Liked — the grounds and the spa
  • Disliked — nothing
