“Okay for what it is”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

This is a okay hotel for what it is. It is an historic hotel so it does not have the amenities of other hotels or bed and breakfast hotel. So if you are looking for amenities this is not the place for you. But most places in Union Pier require more than a two day stay - especially for rentals.

We had room 11 - it was nice and cute! Love the rocking chairs.

Let me say you can hear everything from the other rooms in the hotel. So just be prepared. We did not hear the restaurant but we did hear our neighbors.

Also they have a weird policy about the heat and air. The problem we had when we stayed there was that it was hot during the day and cool at night. So the first night we walk in late and it was cold and it was cold all night. Now then the next day after going to the beach we came back and it was over 80 degrees in the room and we had not touched the thermostat. We went to dinner and came back and it was still 80 degrees. My husband went downstairs and told the manager and she explained it was too cold so they had turned off the air. She was definitely not super friendly in explaining this.

I have to admit if I had more time to plan I would have tried to get a bed and breakfast place.

Stayed in room 2. Large, comfortable, clean.......it's a room, nothing fancy. But I came for the beach. And only a short walk away and a pleasant walk at that. It was pleasing to see all the homes and lovely trees and landscaping. The beach is spectacular.....beautiful sand, clear water, rocks and pebbles........as for putting out your little flag on the beach.........in season and on the weekends the beach would be mobbed if security couldn't discern an association member from the general public......so not a bad idea.

The inn itself is not bad but I was a litte apprehensive after reading the reviews. I booked a reservation for myself on the spur of the moment, wanting to get away from it all for awhile. The room met all my expectations. I'm not sure what the expectations were of all the people that wrote negatively. I was not expecting the J.W. Marriott, it's a beach inn for Pete's sake. Yes, the restaurant is big, taking up the first floor and the main attraction second to the beach (lost my parking spot Friday night and had to park on the grass in the common area). So there is no cozy lobby/sitting room. But I was able to snag an Adirondak chair on the front porch on Saturday night after eating at Timothy's and sip coffee and people watch. There was a wedding reception going on and my waitress suggested the porch and she would come outside and refill my cup....it was nice. And the bright, young college girl at the front desk on Saturday afternoon....charming and helpful.

So overall, it was what I expected for a beach vacation town......not a five star resort, just a nice homey experience.

We had a clean, comfortable room with a good bed, good bathroom, fresh paint and carpeting. The restaurant does take over the lower floor at dinnertime, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I don't see what the complaints are about. We have stayed at the sibling, Lakeside Inn, and our experience here was better. Friendly staff, good coffee in the morning. It's an old resort-town inn. If you want the Best Western, go out to the highway.

We have been going to Gordon Beach Inn for several years and have seen the inn go down hill over the years. The lovely common area with fireplace and cozy seating has been taken over by Timothy's restaurant, which leaves only your room to sit and enjoy an evening drink or read. They did provide coffee in the morning, around 10am with sweet rolls were from Costco, not exactly what you think of when imagining a quaint Michigan Inn. Shaker style furnishings and vintage bathrooms are fine, but the lack of a common area makes you feel like a kid banished to your room for being bratty. On a strange note, the Gordon Beach Association requires you to carry a flag when using the beach, so they know you 'belong' and aren't sneaking into their private beach. Give me a Break!

Room Tip: Eat at Timothy's skip the Inn

All in all things were nice, clean, and room was big enough. Bathroom had new towels, sink and tub clean. It's not a 5 star hotel and it doesn't claim to be one. Bed was very comfortable, firm with new linens. We would stay here again and recently stayed at there sister property Lakeside Inn, that also was a perfectly preserved blast from the past resort.

Like its sister Inn, The Lakeside Inn, just down the road less than a couple of miles in Lakeside, MI, this place has sadly lost its charm. I can refer you to 50john1234 who best sums it up. The rate for the rooms/suites??(hardly) is out of touch with reality, but they get the rates from uninformed guests who have been mesmerized with the "historic" element and undeserved hype. Not to be misunderstood, the Lakeside Inn is barely..barely better. Inadequate A/C, smallish bathrooms, uncomfortable beds, chipped paint, NO tv now in at least a few suites( ..and those that still exist have 12-15 inch screens at best), plus, plus. Unique, quaint, and charming about 15 years ago, now these inns could be best described as run down and are lingering using their historic landmark protection as an excuse to do nothing to improve the properties. The owner(s) need to drop several thousands of dollars into both places and regroup. Until extensive upgrades are made, we'll stay away. Timothy's Restaurant in the GBI is the only reason to visit either inn. Still, very good...not excellent, but very good.
