“Wow. Outstanding Italian wedding soup!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

I stopped in for lunch while visiting relatives in the area. Hadn't been here in about a year. I had Italian wedding soup and a cheeseburger. (Soup instead of fries.)

The burger was very good, but the soup was just incredible. I'm accustomed to the anemic Italian wedding soup usually served elsewhere--you know the kind: a bowl of broth, a hint of orzo, and two or three meatballs about the size of the nail on my baby finger. George's version was a wonderful surprise: very hearty and good for the soul. The giant yeast roll and soup would have been enough for a meal.

My total bill was $5.77, excluding tip.

Important note: George's takes cash only. An ATM is located across the street in Walgreen's, in case you forget, as I often do.

“Downriver favorite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

This little gem has the same feel the Mercury Restaurant had in Dearbon. No nonsense. Great service. Great food. Fast and friendly service. It is always crowded but the fast service makes it a short wait.

“Great breakfasts!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

We've been here twice and have always had really tasty breakfasts. While the interior isn't fancy, the food is good and plentiful and the service is very friendly. We especially enjoy the biscuits and gravy & the pancakes!

“BEST SAUSAGE GRAVY AROUND”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Nothing fancy here, but good food, big portions, good prices, and good service. George's is family owned by husband and wife who work there. The wife makes all the homemade soups, gravys, and sauces. Great piping hot soups. They offer all kinds of daily specials and their breakfast specials last until 12:30pm every day, even on the weekends. Most restaurant's breakfast specials only last until 11:00am and not at all on the weekend. You get a lot of bang for your buck at George's and the service is great. The waitresses kill you with coffee re-fills.

Last tip, if you like Biscuits and gravy, this is the place. Good biscuit gravy is hard to find and George's does it right. The half order is a meal in itself! Try the "Georges omelete" which has sausage, onion, and potatoes inside and is smothered with that awesome chunky sausage gravy!

“Solid, tasty, and cheap diner fare.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

I've been to George's many times; I make it a point to stop in during occasional visits to family members who live the area. George's is tiny, no frills, and not particularly impressive from the outside. In other words, it's everything a good diner should be.

The soup and breakfast food is my favorite food here. I'm a soft touch when it comes to homemade soup. Last weekend, I had a BLT and tomato-macaroni soup. The BLT was an ordinary BLT, but that's all I ask for: crispy bacon, a decent slice of tomato, and chilled, crunchy lettuce. The soup, as always, was terrific. I ordered some to go.

My parents eat at George's regularly and say the dinners and seafood are quite good, also. But I have to confess I stick with the soup, sandwiches, burgers, and breakfasts.

Incidentally, the prices at George's are ridiculously low. My BLT, fries, soup, and iced tea were around $7. I know the breakfast specials run around $4 to $6, sometimes less, depending on what you order. Substantive daily specials, like stuffed peppers or meat loaf, can run as little as $5.

Don't expect anything fancy here; but if a good, solid, homemade diner meal is your cup of tea, you'll love the place. I do.
