“Ideal location and ample amenities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2014

I've stayed at this hotel twice now and it's going to be the first place I call for future visits to Traverse City. The location is great -- right on the water and only a 15 minute walk into downtown. (And only a few steps from the local wine shop, the Blue Goat.) ;) My room was clean, comfortable, and provided a full view of the bay from a private balcony. This particular room didn't have a refrigerator, but I had one on my last visit and I understand they have some rentals available if one is needed. (A public microwave is located on the ground level near the arcade and laundry facilities.) Breakfast is free and has both hot and cold options, and I found the staff to be unfailingly friendly and helpful. I've stayed at three or four other places in the Traverse City area and would include the Bayshore among the best.

Room Tip: Get a room with a full view of the bay -- you won't regret any extra cost. If you want a fridge...

This has become one of our favorite hotels in the US midwest, although we discovered it purely by chance.

When we travel we're generally looking for fun exercise, great places to visit and interesting food. The traverse city area has all of these in abundance and the Bayshore resort is perfectly located.

The cycling (which we mostly do on vacation) is outstanding (TART trail to Suttons Bay, Peninsula circuit, VASA trail and many more road routes) and the hotel is well positioned for getting onto all these trails. It's also only a couple of blocks from some great bicycles stores (eg McClain). After a day's biking we really enjoyed the hotel's large pool and hot tub for relaxing before dinner - there's an OK exercise room as well but we didn't generally find we needed this as the weather was fine.

The hotel is perhaps the only one we've found in the area with beach-front rooms that have large balconies overlooking the bay (definitely go for the beach front rooms) that is also within a short walking distance of downtown. The downtown part of TC with its diverse restaurants is around a 10 minute walk away and perhaps 4 minutes by bicycle. You could drive, but the walk by the lakeshore is a treat especially after dinner. On our latest visit we discovered lunch at 'little Fleet' and the exceptional tasting dishes at 'Northern Natural Cider House and Winery' - both are only a short walk from the hotel. Of course there are many more microbreweries (North Peak, Mackinaw, Craft work, Filling station), restaurants and bakeries in the downtown area, but our favorite place to visit became the village at grand traverse commons. This is slightly further away (maybe 15 muntes by bike, 10 minutes by car) but well worth the trip if only for the wonderful historic buildings. The Mercato at the village is a half mile long ramble through a historic building crammed with craft stores, restaurants etc and well worth several visits (we recommend the Blackstar farms tasting room for its cheese plate and wine selection).

Outside of town are the sleeping bear dunes (take the Pierce Stocking Drive route), historic fishtown, the Leyland wineries, the peninsula wineries, etc, etc. We hired a car for one day and managed to get to a few but not all of these.

While we really like this hotel for its excellent location, it was also great in general. Spacious and quiet rooms (particularly on the top floor), exceptionally friendly staff, useful airport courtesy shuttle, lots of choice in the free breakfast, a great sandy beach. We enjoyed our visit immensely.

The only thing I'd suggest is that the standard (non-suite) rooms have large comfy beds, but no comfy chairs. If you stay for a week or more, the wooden furniture can become tiring, especially after a long day of driving/bicycling.

Tip for those visiting: if you have a few bugs on your balcony in the morning consider turning off the balcony light (there's a switch underneath). If you don't then the light will automatically come on late at night and can attract bugs.

Room Tip: The beach-level (ground floor) rooms are good for families with kids. The top floor rooms have the...

We stayed here back in the end of May/June 2013 and it was very nice. We didn't have a bay view, but a side view and would have rather had the bay view, but it was still fine. The bathroom was a decent size and the beds were comfortable. The breakfast was your typical breakfast with hot food. Traverse City is a really nice place for those who love food and wine. Hopefully plan to go back again soon!

Room Tip: Choose a bay view if you want to see the water without having to look around the building. Those roo...

Stayed for 2 nights mid-week. Got a great rate. The beds were horrible; very hard, but the hotel was quiet. Not many guests. Note that there is not a refrigerator or microwave in the rooms. View of the bay was great but it rained the whole time. Overall, just ok.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014 via mobile

I've been to Traverse City many times, but this was the first time staying at the Bayshore. My initial reaction was that it was not nearly as nice as I had expected or hoped. This is definitely a three star hotel, no more, no less. We did get an unbelievably low rate in February, so no complaints there. The room was large (I think we had a handicapped room), but the appointments were very dated and worn. The bathroom towels may have been the thinest, hardest, scratchiest towels I've ever had the displeasure of using in a hotel. Same for the sheets, bed, and pillows. If the Bayshore updated these items, might be a four star place. Pool is nice, but generally going to be packed with screaming kids on the weekends. We were there in February, so couldn't enjoy the beach, but it seems like it would be very nice. The Bayshore is also close to downtown, so you could walk it in nice weather. Not in February though. Staff was mostly friendly, except for the young lady who checked us in. She had a bit of an attitude and actually made us feel a little bad for getting such a good rate. I used the exercise room, and it was pretty nice. On Thursday night, it was quiet in the evening and night. On Friday, it was packed with kids running up and down the halls, slamming room doors, and jumping on the beds. Hockey tournament I think. The breakfast is pretty typical. Not good by any stretch of the imagination, but good sustenance for kids and families. They had a machine that made pancakes, so I had to give that a try. Cool machine, but the pancakes were thin and a little chewy.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

We come each year for Christmas with the family. The hotel is clean and the staff help out anyway they can. Breakfast was great and a large variety to choose from. Only issue is the pool and the amount of chlorine used. My kids break out anytime they swim there. Otherwise location, service and room comfort are great and will be back again next year.
