I made the mistake of leaving $600 in cash in the room so I went back to retrieve it. When I got there the maid was in the room and my envelope was gone. She of course denied it. I called the police and was told 'we get called here a lot'. The only thing the manager did was send the maid home. No integrity. No honesty. It makes me sick.

We went into this knowing the possibility of disappointment. After reading all the reviews, we were nervous. I noticed people either loved it or hated it. I think one reviewer summed it up well stating if you are looking for room service or concierge, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a place to stay where they go out of their way to make sure you're having a good time, this is the place. First floor rooms have 2 double beds and a bath with walk in shower. They have easy access to the beach, parking lot and small area to walk your dog. Second floor rooms have one double bed, walk in shower and a beautiful view of the bay. One long balcony across the second floor. Room windows are angled to face the bay. The staff is amazing! The owner is very lucky to have Cheryl, Mickey and Amanda. These ladies are doing a pneaumonal job with limited resources. I think this place is a diamond in the rough with great potential. The rooms are small and need some updating. Connecting rooms for families would be a nice addition. They offer a continental breakfast. Basic food such as bagels, cereal, toast, with a couple of fresh fruits. The sitting area is small but not a big deal. Enjoy their large deck while eating breakfast. They have kayaks, water trampoline and an amazing beach. The water is clear and the beach is sandy. Kids didnt even need water shoes. A beach Bon fire pit with a stack of wood is available for one of the guests to start a Bon fire. A large cabana with a patio table and chairs, perfect if it is raining. They even have a netted swing in a tree. Again, this is a diamond in the rough and they are on the right path. We stayed five nights and felt like we were leaving family when we checked out. We met a lot of nice people. They also welcome your pets.

let me just start with, i couldn't believe the prices in traverse city compared to mackinaw city but, the sands motel was more friendly and handicapped accessible. it was still a little pricey but compared to the motels in the area, it wasn't bad, especially being it was short notice. the rooms were clean and didn't smell like chemicals ( thank goodness). free cook out dinner once a week..breakfast...bon fire.... wow.......it was great. WiFi available inside the rooms. free kayak's and water trampoline. the people that owns the place are awesome...shout out to mickey.!!! i would stay again and again...the only thing that creeped me out was the spider webs...

Great room for a motel. All rooms see the water which is right in front of you. They have a nice little breakfast with fresh local fruit. An awesome beach with perfect sand and water. If your not going in with huge expectations you won't be disappointed. FYI they don't have private butlers. They do have a real nice fire pit on the beach with a huge pile of wood. Most the people you talk to at the motel are thier for their second, third, or + stay. We will go again and again.

Wow, what a blast we had at the Sands. We brought our son & his family to stay at the Sands for his 30th birthday. We had two rooms and stayed five days, four nights. Although I wish I had booked them in a double, there was nothing we did not need for as far as things to do at the beach, which is just beautiful. Chris the owner made BBQ on 2 nights that we were there. There are Kayaks, Jet Skis, Paddle Boats, Water Trampoline, Para Sailing, Power Boat Renting within feet, there is a deck to sit & eat lunch or breakfast at, there is usually a campfire every night. And Mickey is the Greatest!!! We met the greatest family from Chicago, along with a wonderful couple Dave & Leona which we plan on returning next year for a "family" reunion. If you are looking for a quaint family owned Motel & private beach, with lots to do to just chilling. You just found it! Enjoy & Have Fun

We paid considerably less than several other hotels we called and we got way more than we would have at the fancier hotels around (i.e. Sugar Beach, etc). We're glad we chose The Sands because being small, it was convenient to park right outside our door and be on the beach in 60 seconds--in other words, didn't have to walk down long hallways and elevators to get to the beach. We had free kayaks with life jackets, and a fantastic 14 foot water trampoline to play on... all free. Plus the breakfast was better than expected with quite a variety of stuff to choose from (no hot food, but did have toaster and microwaveable items). This is an older motel so it isn't perfect and could use some painting in areas, but it was just right for our one night stay. Rooms are a little small and most with double beds. Had a bonfire on the beach with the wood they provided and roasted marshmallows with holders they provided. We created way better memories here than we would of at most of the hotels around who don't offer the free amenities that The Sands does. There is also a convenient rental stand adjacent to their beach for parasailing, etc. We will stay here again if we get back to Traverse City area.
