“Lovely stay- we'll be back!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013 via mobile

The Anchor Inn is a quaint mix of cottages and motel rooms set close to downtown Traverse. If you read through the reviews and know what to expect with the age and size of rooms, you'll be pleasantly surprised. The owners keep the rooms extremely clean, and provide a personal touch you can't get from a big chain. The grounds are lovely as well. If you need to stay in a new and modern facility, this is not the place for you. If you appreciate character and a personal touch, you'll love the Anchor Inn.

The property's web site advertises eight of their units as "cottages" and for that reason I made a booking. Well, my "cottage" was part of a seven unit dwelling. The owner indicated that it was classified as a cottage because it had a kitchen, i.e. a stove, sink and refrigerator. In my opinion that's not a correct definition of "cottage", and it seems that the web site is presented in such a way as to catch the interest of people, such as myself, who like the cottage experience. Furthermore, using such logic, any dwelling with a similarly equipped kitchen is a cottage. That being said, the unit I was in was sufficient as a motel suite, except that the bathroom was very small and a little worn. If your quads are in bad shape you might have trouble getting on and off of the toilet- when you're on it your knees will practically hit the wall. As indicated elsewhere, there is a small private beach across the road from the property--I should mention that the speed limit at the point one would cross the road is 55 mph. The location is convenient to Traverse City. I would have rated this establishment as a 3 if these units were advertised and sold as motel rooms or suites rather than cottages.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the Anchor Inn.
I agree with you that our website targets those who enjoy a cottage experience. I believe that is exactly what we offer. At the Anchor Inn guests can relax on a sandy beach, cruise the bay on a kayak, take a snooze in a hammock under a shade tree, cook on a charcoal grille and eat outside on a picnic table. play horseshoes, volleyball, ladder ball, croquet, and other yard games and roast marshmallows around a campfire on the beach.
These are some of the reasons so many of our guests come back year after year.

Regards,

John

This motel was a perfect stop in Traverse City. It is in a wonderful location with a nice private beach access. The room was clean and comfortable. We appreciated the refrigerator and microwave and there is a nice play area for the kids. We would definitely come back. The entire family got the best nights rest at this motel.

The Anchor Inn on the Bay is a fantastic place to stay in Traverse City. They have a variety of cabin options, from single bed motel rooms, to two bedroom cabins complete with a full kitchen and plenty of sleeping arrangements. Very quaint, very clean. The owners are the kindest, most helpful couple. I was married in Traverse City and had family coming from all over the world (Sweden, Key West, LA!) and they did everything they could to accommodate them. We stayed for an entire week and there was never a shortage of activity at the cabin...yard games, play area, fire pit both in the yard AND on the beach. I can't say enough about this inn...we will be coming back year after year.

Room Tip: Cabin 101 is the larger of the two-bedroom cabins. Motel room 104 is the smallest, but works quite w...

Good location with easy access to TC and Leelenau peninsula. Fairly priced. Simple conveniences. Ample parking. Quiet and relaxing. It is a small cottage room set your expectations. Worked perfectly for what we needed - a place to rest and refresh after a day of exploring the area. Would not hesitate to stay again on our next visit!

We had issues traveling and consequently arrived later than we planned. Received a phone call from the owner's wife en route asking us if we were still coming, and upon our arrival found him to be extremely irritated and rude. This was not late at night but at about 6;30. After giving us a key, he left the premises and we did not see him again during our two day stay. The room that looked so cute online had walls that were paper thin--we could hear our neightbor's every word. The parking was basically non-existant and on gravel. The beach area is across a major road. we were very disappointed and will not be back or recommend this to anyone.

Mary,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We welcome all feedback as this is the only way we know what we are doing right and where we can improve.
First, I would like to apologize if I came off as rude. It certainly wasn't intentional and is not my nature.
In regards to not seeing me after check in, Sara and I are at the Inn most of day, as we do most of the housekeeping and maintenance, but most of our guests aren't, as they are out enjoying the attractions of the Grand Traverse area. We are always accessible as we carry a cell phone and live 4 minutes away.
The entrance to our property is paved, but the parking lot is crushed stone. It stays cooler and is much better for dissipating the water after a hard rain. The parking lot is tight when we have a full house, but we want to keep a balance between parking area and our green area which is one of the attractions of our property. We are working on creating some auxiliary parking behind the units in the near future.
Yes, our beach is across M-22, a two-lane state road. This is shown on the map in our brochure and explained to anyone when taking a reservation.
Walls between the units are 8" concrete, with the windows open in the spring it is possible to have some noise transmission, but we have had very few complaints over the years that we have owned the Inn.
We purchased the Anchor Inn 2-1/2 years ago and have made significant improvements, many which have been suggested by our clients. Our goal is to make this a place people want to return to year after year. Again, thank you for your input and I hope this helps to explain some of your issues.

Cool cabins and rooms with great outdoor and common areas. Great place for families, groups, anyone. Comfortable beds, fresh flowers. Friendly and knowledgeable owners. Great yard with fire pit, games, and nice beach. Great nap in the hammock! Cannot wait to return.
