My husband and I are spending the week in Traverse City and were asking some people where we should spend our last night...either the Apache Trout Grill or Firefly. It was about equal in most opinions. They said if we wanted seafood and steak, we should go to Apache Trout Grill..so we did. My husband's boss also suggested we eat there. My husband ordered the ribeye, which came with green beans and a baked sweet potato. He was pleased with his meal, especially the sweet potato with the glaze. The steak, he said, was in his top ten ribeye's but not the best.
I was not so pleased with my meal. I ordered the Apache Classic Whitefish, fried in Panko crumbs with cole slaw and baked mac n cheese. The mac n cheese was not very hot and I didn't really enjoy the flavor of it. The cole slaw was your typical close slaw, nothing spectacular and I was truly disappointed in the taste or lack of taste in the fish. I can truly say I liked the fish n chips at Skalawag's in downtown Traverse City much better than my meal at Apache Trout. The meals there are not cheap and I only ate 1/2 of my fish and since we are traveling there is no reason to take a doggie bag with us. I can also say I ordered clams as an appetizer and at first thought I shouldn't have because I would stuff myself, but now I'm glad I did, since they were much more tasty than my fish. The whitefish was just really blahh tasting! We spent $70 for the two of us, including tip, for two meals, an appetizer and ice water. The ribeye is $29.99, the whitefish was $18.95 and the clams were $7.95.
Oh, our waitress brought our meal out on the tray, sat it down and then proceeded to take doggie bags to the table next to us and left our food sitting on the tray until she had taken care of the other table...we would have thought she would have given us our food first, then given them their doggie bags instead of leaving our food sit there!!
It was nighttime when we visited, too, so we really didn't get to enjoy the beauty the restaurant must showcase, since it was pretty dark inside.
