“Very Enjoyable Resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2011

The Sugar Beach Resort is a great destination! The resort staff are helpful, the facilities are very well kept up, and the beach is wonderful. I recommend this resort for both families and couples.

Room Tip: We selected a beach view balcony room to have a better view of the bay.

This hotel has fantastic beach but for the price we paid they should have had a working internet connection in our room. The lake water is very clean and warm. They do an excellent job in maintaining the beach. Plenty of beach chairs. Great people watching and lots of activities for kids to do. We were there for 4 days and never were able to get an internet connection in our room that laster for more than 5 minutes. The front desk staff would imply that their system worked fine by saying there people in the lobby using the internet without any problems. It would not been so aggravating if they would just admitted they have a problem. For those prices you should be able to use the internet in your room. The hotel is well maintained and the staff are very nice. The breakfast is good food but the space is too small for the number of people. Rooms are clean and very nicely furnished. Nice indoor pool too. Lots of variations of rooms from which to pick.

The only good thing about this "resort" was the view! We had a second floor room with a balcony overlooking the bay/beach. The outside appearance of the hotel is very inviting, but once inside...well, that's a different story! First of all, the carpets are disgusting in every location,( ie. stairways, hallways, and rooms). The doors and elevators looked as if they hadn't been cleaned in weeks, there were grungy handprints galore! There was also an awful odor emanating throughout the hotel, it was one of stale cigarette smoke...yuck! The beds were extremely uncomfortable, with their "pancake pillows", super cheap linens, bunchy mattress cover, and very outdated comforters. The bathroom was the nicest part of the room, atleast it had been updated. Our stay did include breakfast, which was ok, but you better get there when no one else is, or you won't get a seat in the tiny breakfast area. Also, I decided to do a load of laundry on our last nights stay...shouldn't have!! The 1980's washer left rust spots on some of our clothing, and the dryer, well let's just say it didn't dry! Oh, and forget about going to the pool, unless you enjoy being in a sauna. The pool area had to have been 110 degrees, it was soooo hot in there you couldn't catch your breath! And one more thing, they charge you a $10 per day "resort fee" for beach towels (that were never at the beach cabinet location), beach grooming, and etc. Seriously, that's not included in the $260 a night stay?? We will not be coming back to this so called resort, nor will we recommend it!

My wife and I stayed for the weekend at the Sugar Beach Resort approximately one month ago, and felt it was a good experience. First off, the greatest asset this hotel had was its location. There are few hotels with as good location in Traverse City. You can wake up and walk out onto the beach and at the same time you're just a minutes drive from the heart of downtown. Another strong point of the hotel was its service. The front desk was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. A casual query, such as 'which restaurant is good in the area' yielded a list of restaurant descriptions, menu print-outs, and a city map. For our departure, I asked for the best route to my destination and, once again, the front desk staff printed out a map. Even our floor's housekeeping was extremely social and polite. We were very pleased with this end of things. As for the room itself, we stayed in a king bed spa room. I'm unfamiliar with the layouts of the other rooms, and since we had a courtyard view, there was no balcony. Overall, the room was above average. The room was fairly spacious and the hot tub was wonderful. The television was on the ancient side, but they provided a good list of channels. The furniture seemed to be of good quality. The sink had a granite counter top and there was an in room fridge. Everything was cleaned very well. My main complaints with the room was that it did not have a safe and that the bathroom size was tiny (obviously, to make room for the hot tub on the opposing side of the wall) and there was no room for a sink in it. We found that to be inconvenient. The other undesirable trait is that the hotel is extremely busy. That's not a bad thing for the hotel, but for the guest visiting during peak season it means you really are expected to check out by 11AM and there is very little flexibility. In terms of value, the hotel was reasonable although a bit on the pricey side. That said, there were few good bargains for the time period we stayed in Traverse City. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would really consider it for the future as well.

Stayed here at the recommendation of a friend and absolutely loved it! PERFECT location directly on the beach. Huge private beach. Booths for parasailing and boat/jet ski rental are right there on your beach! Also has Pirates Cove across the street and is an easy drive to downtown. Rooms are great with micro and fridge to save $$ and choice of big balcony overlooking the lake. Awesome place to stay!

This is our second time staying here. We got a king whirlpool room for only $109.! What a great deal. We didn't have a reservation and arrived late friday evening. The front desk staff was welcoming and inviting. Our room was clean and modern. We loved the large in room whirlpool and glass shower in the bathroom. The indoor pool is clean and kept nice and warm. I didn't use the hot tub this time since I am pregnant, but it looked steamy and warm. The pool even has adult swim hours from 10pm - 11pm. That is great every hotel should do this. Breakfast is included here, we enjoyed fresh Belgian waffles with cherry topping and whipped cream both mornings. What a good value not to have to leave the resort and pay for breakfast. The views from the breakfast area are beautiful, too. The beach is pretty and kept very well. Overall, we loved it here yet again and will be back next summer!

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are very pleased that you found our staff to be helpful and accommodating. Although we are a family resort, we do understand that relaxation time for adults is very important. So glad you enjoyed the adult swim time during your stay. We pride ourselves on exceeding expectations. Hope to see you again soon.

We were absolutely astounded by Sugar Beach Villa #2008---what an incredibly beautiful view! From the moment we walked in we felt we have definitely made a wise choice. It was spacious and well designed having a large master suite with attached full bath with a walk in shower with two shower heads! The other bedrooms were spacious and well equipped, one having an attached walk-in shower and the other having a full bath with a bath tub adjacent and across the main hall. All bedrooms had televisions with free cable channels. The heated tile floors in all three bathrooms and the kitchen made for a nice cozy stay on our winter weekend getaway! We will definitely be back and have already made reservations for July 2011.

Room Tip: Request a waterfront room on the second floor
