“Great experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2011

On a recent trip to Traverse City we were looking for something to do and on a whim decided to sign up for an afternoon sail on the bay. None of us had been on a tall ship before and the forecast called for rain, so we weren't sure what to expect. It turned out to be a beautiful afternoon (after some morning rain) and the experience was a highlight of our week trip around Lake Michigan. The staff was excellent-- very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. We spent 2hrs on the water and enjoyed every minute of it. Would highly recommend it for all able adults and older children. Considering going back for a longer trip.

“Worth doing once!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2011

This is the kind of attraction that you HAVE to do once when visiting the Travese City area. But you probably would not ever do it again. We went on a Sunday night which is the beer/pizza cruise. The beer was provided and served by Short's Brewery in Belaire, MI & it made the trip worth it! You get to sample 4 micro-brews, and they were not stingy with the beers. We each had 4-6 oz of each kind and if there was extra after everyone was served, you could have how ever much you wanted. The pizza was probably very good, but by the time it was served it was cold. Not a real problem for us, but we didn't get the real flavor of a hot out of the oven pizza.
The cruise itself was sort of uneventful. The schooner sailboat leaves the dock in Greilickville, just up the coast from Traverse City, and goes out into the bay. After turning around a couple of times to give you different views of the bay, it goes back to dock. Not very exciting. On a very calm day without the benefit of beer, this could be boring! The only fun part, if you choose to participate is that they ask for volunteers to help raise the sails. This is for adults, although they let kids hold the rope and pretend they are helping. ;-) The crew was fun college aged young adults who don't act like they are bored even though the make this same cruise every day 3 times a day.
For what the trip is, I think it's a little overpriced. We paid $50 each for the beer cruise, with regular evening cruises at $42. You don't really go anywhere or see much of anything.
Oh well, we did it once, and if we are ever in the area again, we won't be tempted to do it again. Been there, done that, as they say.

“Very Enjoyable Sail”

My wife and I had a very enjoyable Noon Sail on August 8. The crew and captain were very skilled and made the sail enjoyable! Highly recommend this activity for all who come to Traverse City.

“August 9, 2011”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2011

The sail across Grand Travese Bay was beautiful. Full winds filled the sail, as the Manitou slipped through the waters. Loved every minuet of it. A sampling of wines were offered as well as an array of lushcious appitizers.
Spent the night on board rocked to sleep by the waters and awoke to wonderful fresh made muffins and coffee. Later served a full breakfast that would satisfy even the most robust appitite.
The Captain and crew were so helpful, so assuring and as friendly as family.
I would highly recomment this experience to anyone with the love of the water. Would love to go again.

“Music, sails, dinner company”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2011

I saw the ship out at the pier and decided to find out if it was something I could afford. I found their website and learned that heir prices were very reasonable. I took the two hour chanty cruise. It was great. It was my first experience abourd a large sailing ship. I was very lucky for this trip the wind was perfect. As we sailed out we learned a bit about sailing a ship and some of us were given jobs to get the sails up and under wind power. It was a beautiful evening and the silence when the motor was shut off was perfect. We had a dinner of a turkey wrap, sodas or purchased wine or local beer salad and cookie. Sandwich was great salad and cookie, OK. Local beer was excellent. Musicians performed Great Lakes "sea chanties" A wonderful evening altogether. I would love to try the overnight trip.
