“Put Mike the Bartender and all the bellmen in charge!!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

I stayed here for 2 nights in Jan 2014 and had an average stay. I was there for work over a weekend and was OK with stay but it was not up to what I expect from a Westin EXCEPT for the bellmen and Mike the bartender!

I used a pair of "suite upgrades" from my status as a SPG member and was initially put into the "honeymoon suite." On arrival on the floor I could smell the chlorine long before I got to the room. IN the room it was unbearable. The honeymoon suite means it has a hot tub in the room. This was so heavily chlorinated that out was hard to breath in the room. I called asking to be moved and the front desk told me "You KNOW why we have to clean the tub like that, don't you?" In general I was given bad information by the front desk on directions, charged $20 for valet despite the sign out front showing $18... management issues.

My new room was a nice normal Westin room. Junior suite, nice bed and lots of space. All night long I had the thrill of hearing loud hockey families in town for a kids tournament. No policing of the noise by the property. I worked all day so too tired to complain and did not want to move again.

The High point of this property is Mike the bartender. I ate at the restaurant each night and had drinks with Mike as well. GREAT service, Good drinks, pleasant, and a pro. Dinner was fine, a little pricey for what you get but the service and convenience make up for it.

The bellmen/valets were polite and helpful (they knew more about the property than the ladies at the desk!!!!!). Each time I picked up my car, they had it running and warm by the time I picked it up.

So, mixed bag. Average Westin rooms (so pretty good for the price), great service from Mike/bellmen, and bad from the front desk.

Room Tip: Stay away from the pool area. Not only did my first room have bad chlorine smell, so did the halls...

I am currently staying at this property. It is definitely starting to show its age. I am a SPG Gold member, and in an executive king room on a SPG preferred floor. The room is slightly bigger than a standard room with a sitting area, couch. Room is very quiet. Bed is the great Westin bed, newer Flat screen TV. This hotel is a good option for staying outside of Detroit. It is an easy 25 minute drive to the city. Front desk is very friendly and helpful with recommendations for area restaurants. Overall decent option for work in the Detroit area.

Had a great first stay at Westin Southfield back in April 2012 for a baseball game on a weekend. We booked this hotel via Priceline at a very good price and the king bed room was really nice! Our second time back we went with friends in July 2013 and the only major complaint was the drainage in the showers were not working properly but the front desk was very nice to have our rooms together! The location is relatively safe but quite a drive to downtown. The malls and restaurants in the surrounding area are also very nice!

The front lobby smells awesome, reminded me of the Venetian in Las Vegas!

One of the better hotels in Detroit so I would definitely go back. However, they do need to fix their shower drainage though!

Not up to Westin standards in other cities. Front desk service was great and prompt. Hotel bar service was slow and uninformative. Room was average and could use a refresher ( peeled ceiling, burnt lamp shades...). What was most upsetting were the dirty glasses! When brought up to light, they were full of smudges and clearly not washed. Paid with points but was charged 50$ on my credit card. Now have to deal with that issue. Not a pleasant end to my trip.

Hearing that there were several challenges during your recent stay does not make us very happy and we do apologize for any inconveniences you encountered while here. Your comments will be shared with our Housekeeping Associates in order to re-emphasize our commitment to quality service levels. The charge you spoke of is more than likely an incidentals hold and was released upon check-out. Many times, it takes a few days for your bank to reciprocate the removal. Thank you for sharing your concerns and we hope to be able to welcome you back for a much improved stay in the future. Stay well.

We checked in at 1 am and we're lucky enough to nab a junior corner suite on the 4th floor. We found worn furniture, but we still had the comfy Westin bed and a very large room with a rickety low table in the middle of the room and two sitting chairs with one ottoman. The service staff were fine from the reception to house cleaning and concierge.

I came as a Starwoods guest, and they listed it as a 3 star hotel, which it is. There's a lot of room for improvement, but many things were good. The staff was always friendly, courteous and helpful. The hotel has a useful business center with PCs and a printer. The workout room was minimal and the equipment needs replacing, but after all, JUST DO IT. The hotel common areas could use some sprucing up. And the signage locating the hotel from the street was barely visible. But the bed was great, as were the linens. I sent a pre-email requesting a specific type of room and a hair dryer, and the request was honored, but strangely, no one replied to my email. Anyway, I liked it, and would recommend it. Will try to stay there again in the future.

Room Tip: The ones on the west side have a better view.

This crescent shaped property is nestled between the highway and an enormous parking structure. The hotel itself is very nicely appointed. The room was clean, the beds fabulous and the bathroom very large with a great shower. The only complaint was the difficulty in locating the hotel itself. Signage is non-existent and even with GPS we had to drive through multiple parking lots, and navigate our way through multiple office complexes, to find the lobby. That though is our only complaint. I would definitely stay here again.
