“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

We chose the Hotel Nichols because we wanted a location close to restaurants. It is in downtown South Haven close to several restaurants and shops. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated although the bathroom was tiny. We stayed on a very hot, humid night so we had to run the window air-conditioner that was very noisy. The staff was friendly and helpful. The desk clerk brought us ice and carried my suitcase up the stairs. We enjoyed the breakfast sitting outdoors in front of the hotel.

Hotel Nichols is clean, but the room is a non-upgraded 1950's. The bathroom had a mirror, but not even close to the sink, 2 small bulbs, which didn't create enough light for normal morning prep. The bedroom...bed was like a rock and only 1 chair, which was a hard back dining room type chair. Not what I would expect for $150/night. In addition the owner refused to credit us with the 2 nights we did not stay. Her words "I have your money and I don't care if you stay or leave". 1 day after we departed she charged our credit card for an additional night. In total for 1 night it cost us a little over $600 for 1 night's stay. An absolute horrible experience. Rick Ford

The only positive about this hotel is the location. Was in room 17. Very dark and depressing. Only had overhead light that was very glaring. If you wanted to read in bed you had to read by overhead light.no night stands by bed. Carpet in bathroom looked like toilet had ran over and spot cleaned. No closet. girlfriend weekend celebrating my girl friend's birthday. We hated to go back to our room it was so depressing. I have stayed in very upscale hotels for the rate this hotel charged. Not worth the money. When I told them I was upset with my room they should have moved us to another room. Nothing special about breakfast;store bought pastries etc. Also understand you only have on street parking. Williams street is 3 hour parking 9a to 5p except on Sunday and they will ticket you. Very limited parking on week ends.

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 17!!!! Room one looked very nice.

Hotel Nichols is fantastically located in downtown South Haven. We wanted a place to stay within walking distance of the pier and downtown restaurants and bars, and it appeared there were limited options...Hotel Nichols and Old Harbor Inn. We chose Hotel Nichols and found it to be clean and convenient. The price was very high for the type of amenities, but if you want a downtown location, you just have to pay a high price, apparently. We stayed in the Lighthouse Room which is very tiny, but clean. The hotel is extremely old (as in you can't run the A/C and a hair dryer at the same time) and outdated, but has a certain charm to it. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was decent.

Overall, good place to stay if you prefer downtown location...but be prepared to pay a high price.

Four of us needed 2 weekend nights during Blueberry Festival and wanted did not want to stay in a chain motel out near the freeway. All of us were able to find 24 hr. free parking near by - our car was the furthest away, about 4 blocks, but we moved it in the evening after the day trippers had left. Once we parked, we walked everywhere, including the 1/2 mile to the beach. The rooms are clean, the breakfast included fruit, yogurt, lots of pastries, bagels and cream cheese, and even boiled eggs on Sunday. The owner and staff are all super friendly and we are looking forward to staying at Hotel Nichols next year. We rented apartment A, and received no maid service. This was fine with us, but I overheard the owner asking another guest if they wanted service and if they needed more towels, so if you want your bed made and towels switched out, be sure to request it.

We found Hotel Nichols to be perfect for our brief getaway. The room was lovely, the owner was very nice, and South Haven was wonderful. We were walking distance from Lake Michigan and the lighthouse pier. You could walk around town or sit outside the hotel and relax. I would highly recommend the Hotel Nichols!

Room Tip: All of the rooms have a lot of charm!

Nice little hotel that is close to the water and downtown. The staff were very friendly, which means a lot to us, when on vacation. The price was a little steep for this older hotel, but since we were there for the 4th of July, it was kind of expected.
