“Go and see at least once”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

Make sure you leave enough time to watch the vessels come through. It's not what I would call exciting but sorta like watching grass grow. Check out the museum showing the history. Go get an ice cream across the street to make the experience more enjoyable!

“A must-do!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

Don't pass up the opportunity to take the Soo Locks Boat Tour! Hadn't done it since I was a kid and had a BLAST doing it many, many years later. Great for kids, as well as adults. Very educational and scenic!

“Always Fun & Enjoyable!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

This is a "must see!"

Between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, there is a 21' drop in the water levels and these locks at the Soo are to create a "ladder" that ships can use to climb up or down that water level difference. In all, it's an engineering marvel and you will not be disappointed when you see the scale at which it is.

The site is complete with a Visitor's centre which describes the operations of the locks, shows where vessels are within the St. Mary's River system, and has various display and videos about lock operations and the role of the Corps in keeping the systems up and running. From the viewing pavilion you get a great view of the entire lock system and the ships as they make their journeys up- or down-bound.

“For young and young at heart!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

First, entrance is FREE. Second, even though admission is free, the attraction is interesting. Third, volunteers and staff are eager to share their knowledge and experience. Most importantly, the viewing platform allows for incredible views of how the locks work and the mammoth freighters that ply these waters. As further recommendation, one of my guests was an experienced traveler and ex-navy officer and even he found this a highlight of his trip to Michigan.

Parking is easy and convenient, but meters are required to be paid at all times. As previously mentioned, it can get windy on the platform and as autumn comes, bundling in layers is highly recommended. The Soo Locks are a definite for all to see and enjoy.

“Fun and educational.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

The locks are really interesting. They have a free museum that has the history of the locks. There are films and displays, plus workers who can answer your questions and tell you when the next ships will be in. The outdoor viewing platform is really good, but cold and windy in the fall and winter, so bundle up!
