“Fits our purpose”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

The location of this property is EXCELLENT. It is right on the water, literally just feet out, with a balcony to enjoy in the evening. One of our mornings was rough though because we could hear someone docked right in front, playing music and talking VERY early, but I guess that comes with the territory. The shops are right outside our door, as is a breakfast place. As for the accommodations, they do leave something to be desired. The blinds are difficult to work with, there is a TV/DVD player with 5 or 6 remote controls lying around it with directions that were not so easy to follow. Took time just to figure that out. We have run out of supplies, and they seem dismayed or annoyed with furnishing us with basic paper products. As other reviewers have mentioned, this is not luxury--furnishings and linens are outdated. They are average accommodations. Would I stay here again? Yes, because I don't need a luxurious room and it's more about the time spent with family.

Room Tip: We have seen both rooms- north and south. The north is definitely more spacious but the view from t...

The view and location are awesome. "Most" of the staff are friendly. We stayed there August 2011 for a couple nights.
The bathroom needs updating. There is close parking but forget it if you have a big car or SUV. The rates have gone up again in 2012. Would we stay there again? Yes; but we would expect some imrpovement especially since the rate has gone up $25 during peak season.

This place has some great features in that it is literally on the edge of the water and walking distance to shops and restaurants. The bedroom has a comfortable king bed and the living area is spacious, as is the sofa bed. But it does not fit my idea of luxury especially in the bathroom which needs an update - an ancient jacuzzi, linoleum, chipped paintwork and numerous plastic flower arrangements were disappointing,. Bathroom linens were old, mismatched and stained. The sofa bed had sheets but only a dubious twin size blanket was provided so it was lucky one of our kids had brought a sleeping bag too. The main bed was not made professionally and the pillows were stained. Always makes me wonder how clean the linens are then! The supposedly fully stocked kitchen didn't have spoons for eating cereal with, only teaspoons. We arrived to a chirping smoke detector which the owner knew about beforehand but had done nothing about before heading off onto the water and leaving us to try and resolve it on our arrival. So overall it was just ok, I wouldn't recommend it to a friend and with so many accommodation places around, would probably look for something different next time around. And yes, sound really carries between the two apartments!

Enjoyed our stay at the River Suites but felt using the term luxury to describe it was a bit misleading. When I think of luxury, I think of luxurious soaps, lotions and linen. That was not the case here. Being that we went in the of season we got a great deal on the rate so I'm not complaining : ). Also there was no service to speak of. Someone gave us the key ( no welcome or info about the area given) and when we checked out we dropped the keys off. One last thing :) you can hear the television and some conversation from the adjoining suite. The TV was Really loud. In closing, I liked the suites (and would probably stay there again) but it should not be considered luxury accommodations.

The suites were booked well in advance so reserve early! The suite is large - it has a big kitchen area a nice sitting area with floor to ceiling windows with great views of the river. There is a small but sufficient balcony. The bedroom is small but has a king bed. The bathroom is large. The suites are located above a small market. The market has a nice deli and fresh baked goods in the morning -- plus drinks, snacks etc. It is very convenient. There is a fishing boat dock right under the suite along the river. The boat departs around 6:30 AM -- there is some noise from that activity. The suites are a great place to relax with a wonderful view. One caveat - apparently some pets are allowed, you may want to check to be sure the people in the other suite do not have a noisy pet. We did not hear voices through the wall separating the two suites, but we DID hear the pet.

Room Tip: The south suite has a better view from the balcony. The north suite is a bit bigger but it overlook...

My wife and I recently stayed at the River Suites of Saugatuck to celebrate our 11 year anniversary. We could only getaway for the weekend so I wanted to make sure to find lodging that offered the best as far as location, amentities ect.. I scoured the internet and must have looked at every hotel, resort and Bed and Breakfast I could find and after considering the competition the River Suites was definatly the right choice. The rates were $150 because we went May 20th-22nd (increses the following weekend). Everyother place was at least $250! We stayed in the North Suite which was Amazing-Great View of the River-clean and very spacious! They have a general store right below which offers snacks, beer, wine ect-Very convenient!! The problem with this review is it will show up on Trip Advisor under specialty lodging which will limit their audience. I had a hard time finding it myself but now that we've experienced The River Suites I would highly recommend it!!

Room Tip: South suite has better view than the North suite

I absolutely love this place! My friends and I go there every year in the dead of winter and have a fabulous time! The owners are friendly and accomodating. The town is great! The rooms are spacious and bright with a great view of the Kalamazoo River. I disagree with the previous poster who was unhappy with their stay. I can't believe they could find one thing wrong with the Suites. It's an absolute pleasure to stay there.
