My husband and I spent a romantic weekend at the Hooten Inn. The rooms were charming and delightfully themed. We stayed in the Safari room and loved it. The owners were helpful and caring, with loads of ideas on what to do for an enjoyable weekend. Our next trip we are going to try the Roman Room. Don't let the outside fool you, the Hooten Inn is a gem.

I have to admit, from the outside (and from the name) I didn't expect much. We were pleasantly suprised to find the room decorated nicely, clean and better yet, run by a very friendly and helpful owner. We were in a pinch to find a place for one night and they had one room available for us. The owner then told us about a great restaurant with limo service and it made a trip that had started out bad get much better instantly. If you need a small room-we thought it was great!

The owner was friendly at first. We arrived back at our hotel the first night with a note on our bed saying that our neighbors said we were yelling, screaming, and partying until 3am which was not true. However, since we were a young couple the owner believed them. So the next night we just rented a movie and the neighbors said we were up partying again, but we were watching a movie and in bed by 1am. So after being on our best behavior, the owner had the audacity to charge my credit card for damages when i did not break anything. It was the worst hotel experience we have ever experienced.

  • Disliked — The owner was horrible

Management response from TheHootens, Owner

In the 4 years we've owned this property we've only had trouble with 2 couples and unfortunately this was one of them.... what they neglected to say is that we received a couple of complaints from other guests about their behavior Friday night – we were informed that this particular couple was “yelling, screaming and parting in the parking lot until 3:00am” and we, as the owners, were asked if we had a policy against that - the other guests were obviously irritated and expected us to take action – they were in town for a romantic weekend NOT a weekender at the frat house!

So we left the offending couple a nice note, informing them that it was not acceptable to do the same Saturday night...instead they spent Saturday night banging on windows and an adjoining wall to one of the other rooms. That couple packed up and left at 11pm Saturday night...here’s what they wrote us in an emailed we received Sunday morning: “After our neighbors returned Saturday evening, they began trying to intimidate us by knocking on our windows and on the adjoining wall. My guess is that they figured out that we had complained about their behavior the night before. We were concerned for our own safety, as well as whether or not they may damage our car”

So YES – this couple was charged for damages. Damages are clearly outlined in our polices; which they agreed to abide by when they signed-in and registered at the property. Damages are usually charged after a guest leaves the property and it was discussed with the guest when she called an inquired about the additional charges. She was charged the exact amount I had to refund to the other couple, instead of our normal $250 damages charge - I felt that was fair.

We run a respectable place where couples come to relax and enjoy themselves; they come here to get away from the kids and not to be kept up all night by them.

Bottom line is – we are not the frat house, if you want to behave that way stay some place else (PLEASE!)

We decided at the last minute on a Friday morning to spend the weekend in Saugatuck. I spent the morning surfing the net and working the phone trying to find a place to stay but everything was booked solid. (Some inn-keepers even laughed when I called to ask if they had rooms for that night!) Not the Hooten Inn. The owner called one of her guests to make sure the guest was still coming in that evening (she was), then went on-line herself (to [--]) to see what was available and made some recommendations. I still had no luck (the listings on saugatuck.com are not always current) and was about to give up when the Hooten Inn owner called me to say she had a last minute cancellation. What a nice thing to do! The outside of the Hooten Inn looks simple, but the rooms are exceptionally clean, freshly painted, and decorated in interesting themes. The high quality linens and towels were a nice surprise. The Hooten Inn isn't grand but I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. And the owners know how to make a guest feel welcome.

  • Liked — Spotlessly clean. Good location.
  • Disliked — No pool.

We have just returned from another long weekend in Saugatuck and as always, we stayed at the Hooten Inn. You cannot beat this motel for value, location and accomodations. It only has eight rooms and each have a different theme, they are very fun and it makes you feel like you are on vacation. The hosts, Cheryl and John are always friendly, upbeat and very helpful.
